wolf primers

I've used only the magnums in both sizes - they're definitely a 'softer' primer than most of the other types I've used. Softer in the contex that they've got a milder flash, based on photos in German Salazar's PS article on primers, and on the lower velocities I've gotten relative to all other primers I'm using. ES & SD numbers have been respectible in all cartridge/load combinations I've tried so far, which range from small primers in Dasher & 6x47 Lapua to large ones in 250 AI, 6.5x55 AI, and 284.

I had a very intersting thing happen with large rifle Wolf primers this weekend. I was shooting IMR 4064 with a 168 grain SMK in my Springfield 1903A3 30-06. I was getting very noticeable hang fires. The only times I have had this happen before was with "weak" primers with reduced loads of a slow powder.

This has never happened with Winchester or Federal primers.

Some people have had trouble with fail to fire and hang fire with Wolf primers. I had two LR's fail to fire with two tries each. I took the primers out when I broke down the load and hit them with a hammer and they went BANG. I have paid much attention to the seating of the primers and noticed that with a Lee hand primer you can feel the primer when the anvil hits the bottom of the pocket and then you need to press a little harder and you will feel the cup bottom out in the pocket. I have not had a fail to fire since doing this. I have not shot a great deal of Wolf primers since making sure the primers do seat right to use them in my hunting ammo. I am still using CCI BR's for my hunting ammo. I would hate to have a big buck in my sights and hear CLICK.

I have always used Fed 210s or Match primers. How does the Wolfs compare to them?? I am needing to buy primers and usually buy 5000 at a time. I hate to buy a bunch an not have them work well with the loads I have now. Shooting 243XC, 260, 6.5x55 and 308s.Any thoughts would be helpful!! Thanks guys!

I know I have went thru at least 10,000 of the new Wolfs so far, mostly LR or LRM) and have yet to have a problem. Not sure what some folks are doing to get hangfires, etc, or if they got a bad batch or something. I tested a bunch of different primers, even my beloved Fed 210M's in my Palma loads and settled on the Wolf LRM as it consistently gave me the best SD out of anything I tested.

And, considering cost, its become a no brainer. But, you gotta use what you have faith in, so if you aint got faith in and Wolfs, that just leaves more out there for those of us that do to buy up. ;)

+1 to what Mudcat said. He is the one that made me turn the corner so to speak, and give up my long time beloved WLR's The Wolf's flat out perform EVERYTHING in both my 6AR,sr size)and both my 6SX and 6XC,lr size). My partner uses them with equally good results in his 260 prone rifle. But as Mudcat says, use what you have confidence it, we certainly wouldn't want to ram anything down your throat!!:)
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

Ive been working with the Wolf primers in 7WSM and 300WSM and the accuracy has been far better than any other combo Ive used.
However, while firing a Savage model 12 in 300WSM I had a missfire, heck a nofire, The primer only showed a very shallow indent/light strike. Repositioned and retried with same result. Well, Savage has never set my world on fire, but I went ahead and fired another 5 rounds with no problems. Checking all the parameters afterwards I found that the Wolf primers sat about 0.oo8-0.010" below the case head. All the others seem to be abt 0.003". I wonder if my Savage wonder rifle wasnt the cause of this missfire rather than the primers. No misfires with R700 or Browning Abolt?? First missfire ive seen in years, other than disposing of trashed handgun primers.???

Anybody using them for a 6BR? I'm getting my gun rebarreled for this caliber and was considering to buy them for the low ES and SD. If so, what would be the good choice, standard or magnum) for the 87g. Vmax and a 105g. VLD and Amax load? I was thinking magnum because the only difference was the hardness and not a hotter flash. Can't tell yet what my load will be for them, but is seems most people are using between 29-31g. for these loads.

Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primers work great in our 6mmBR's. Do not get the standard Small Rifle primers as they are way too soft.

I have been useing them in both the 6mmBR and 6mmAR. They seem to work very well. Consistant velocities and supperb accuracy.

Travelor

Have you compared these to CCI BR4 and 450s to see how they compare? I have a Gun Show coming up this month and was going to buy a couple hundred and try the Wolfs. Local shooters, who haven' tried Wolf) say to use the CCI mentioned above for loads in the 6BR.

Thanks for the info. comparisions on that. That's some pretty impressive numbers for a low priced primers. I pretty much planned on buying a case, but was but a little on the hesitant side because some people experiencing bad things with it. By what I gather on here, as long as a use the magnum primers and seat them a little deeper than standard, I shouldn't have any problems at all. About what primer seating depth are you getting on these? With the CCI I usually seat them between .003-.005, trying to get around .004 consistently.
