Need Tikka TX1 Owners Input

Haven't shot rim fire in many years so I'm out of touch with current offerings. I have several Tikka center fire rifles which are outstanding performers which has me interested in their new rim fire rifle, specifically in 22 Long Rifle.

The rifle would be primarily used for small game hunting at a max distance of 75 yards with a secondary use as a practice rifle and introducing my grand son to shooting.

I would be most thankful for your input on the performance of this rifle. Since this rifle will be used primarily as a hunting rifle, the one performance aspect that I'm particularly interested in is first shot (cold fouled barrel) consistency i.e. point of impact consistency.

The reason for the focus of this performance aspect is that years ago I had a CZ 22 Rim fire rifle that shot very small group with quality ammo (i.e.CCI Target, Federal Gold Metal Target, etc.) but the first shot from either a clean or a fouled barrel would go "wild". When I say "wild" I mean 2 to 3 inches from the sighted in point of impact, the impact location purely random. These first shot flyers are obviously not acceptable for a hunting rifle. Subsequent shots from a warm barrel grouped about 1/2" or less at 50 yards.

I tried every thing suggested by the rim fire experts (Rim Fire Central) to solve this problem, i.e. different brands of ammo, clean / not clean, graphite swab in a clean barrel, clean the throat with a bronze brush and maybe some other procedures that I can't recall. Most of the experts recommended no cleaning and at least a 1 shot per inch of barrel length to condition the clean barrel before shooting for "record" or in my case for "purpose" intended. The only thing that was consistent was the extreme clean / cold fouled barrel flyers.

Also, does this new Tikka rim fire take the same scope mounts as their center fire rifles or are special mounts required and if so which ones do you recommend.

Also, which moderate priced scope do you recommend given the max distance of 50 to 75 yards.

Thank guys. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you all the information.

I have owned two of the T1X in 22 LR and both shot to aim point with the first shot and is usually followed by 4 more to the same aim point. Using CCI Standard Velocity at 50 yds mine can be counted on for 5 shots into 1/2" - 3/4" depending on conditions.

The T!X is an 11mm dovetail also it is drilled and tapped for scope mount bases so you have a choice of mounting systems. 11mm is very close to 3/8" dovetails width which is what most American manufactured rifles have. I use Weaver 3/8" dovetail rings on mine, I bought them at Walmart for $8.99 and have been using them for a couple of years with no issues.

No advice on the scope except to say that if you can find a rimfire specific scope with the objective focus set to 60 yards then you can get by without an adjustable objective. Or you can use a centerfire scope which will have the objective set at 100 - 125 yards you can get by with that but your groups will probably be a bit larger unless you are sure to put your eye the same distance behind the scope each time.

I recommend the BKL rings for the 11mm rails, I use them on my competition guns and they work great. Can't help you on the scope questions, but I would prefer something with 6-20 or 6-24 power but I don't hunt, only compete.

The cold bore issue, it can and does happen to all manufacturers, it is just pretty rare and you might not hear about it. A friend installed a $350 custom barrel on his anschutz competition rifle, and the first shot goes about 1 to 1.5 inches high depending on the distance.

Have one with a NF SHV 3-15 and is perfect for close and long shots. But performs best with good ammo such as SK and no flyers. Very fun to shoot.

I use the BKL rings for competition also but I tried a set on the Tikka and it set the scope too high to get a decent cheek weld on the stock. That is the reason I suggested the Weaver rimfire rings, they put the scope low and make it easier for a youngster to get behind.

My T1X shoots very well. I shoot long range steel and it does very well out to 250yds. I shoot Wolf Match Target for most shooting, Wolf Match Extra for matches. It shoots most target and match very well. I have Athlon Argos 10 x 40 x 57mm for around $400. It is a very big scope.

I just got a T1X, for the price I am impressed, its seems very consistent so far, with the right match ammo and shooter I would be willing to say they will consistently shoot in the 3's & 4's @ 50 yards, I have even shot a few groups in the 2's. One thing to remember they are a factory rifle, your results may vary. The sythetic stock takes a bit of getting use to, but they are decent.

BKL rings come in different heights. I have them on several rifles and consider them a very good product. They attach securely to the 11mm groove mounts. I use the medium height rings with both 40mm and 44mm objective diameter scopes. UMM

I have shot my T1 in a couple informal 50yd bench rest for score matches matches at our club. We use the standard 50 yd 3P smallbore target and the 50 meter metric target. First sighter with Eley yellow box target is always in the group. Scores have been in the upper 190's with good X counts.

Use a DIP rail with Burris signature "Z" rings on mine.

Close out sale Bushnell 6-18 Trophy scope has worked fine on mine for several years. It stays zeroed at 50 yards so I can not speak for its repeatability of adjustments. The club has had a few activities for rimfire out to 300 yards and is putting some on the 2022 schedule. If I use the rifle for them I may put a different scope on it.

My biggest long term concern regarding the rifle is the durability of the plastic magazines .

I've had my T1x just over a year now and have put more than 1,600 rounds through it. No concerns whatsoever about first round accuracy. I mostly practice, but since September, I've taken 25 squirrels with this rifle and most of those have been head shots, the longest of which was 62 yards (due to terrain and being heavily wooded, I don't often get the opportunity at further shots on game). At 300 yards, the rifle will consistently hit a 10" steel plate using SK Standard. It has been a joy to shoot and a lot of fun. I highly recommend the T1x. I've seen no cause for concern over durability of the magazine or any other component.
