Haven't shot rim fire in many years so I'm out of touch with current offerings. I have several Tikka center fire rifles which are outstanding performers which has me interested in their new rim fire rifle, specifically in 22 Long Rifle.
The rifle would be primarily used for small game hunting at a max distance of 75 yards with a secondary use as a practice rifle and introducing my grand son to shooting.
I would be most thankful for your input on the performance of this rifle. Since this rifle will be used primarily as a hunting rifle, the one performance aspect that I'm particularly interested in is first shot (cold fouled barrel) consistency i.e. point of impact consistency.
The reason for the focus of this performance aspect is that years ago I had a CZ 22 Rim fire rifle that shot very small group with quality ammo (i.e.CCI Target, Federal Gold Metal Target, etc.) but the first shot from either a clean or a fouled barrel would go "wild". When I say "wild" I mean 2 to 3 inches from the sighted in point of impact, the impact location purely random. These first shot flyers are obviously not acceptable for a hunting rifle. Subsequent shots from a warm barrel grouped about 1/2" or less at 50 yards.
I tried every thing suggested by the rim fire experts (Rim Fire Central) to solve this problem, i.e. different brands of ammo, clean / not clean, graphite swab in a clean barrel, clean the throat with a bronze brush and maybe some other procedures that I can't recall. Most of the experts recommended no cleaning and at least a 1 shot per inch of barrel length to condition the clean barrel before shooting for "record" or in my case for "purpose" intended. The only thing that was consistent was the extreme clean / cold fouled barrel flyers.
Also, does this new Tikka rim fire take the same scope mounts as their center fire rifles or are special mounts required and if so which ones do you recommend.
Also, which moderate priced scope do you recommend given the max distance of 50 to 75 yards.
Thank guys. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you all the information.
