Need some opinions on cal. choice!

Hey Shooter's,
I,m considering a rifle .Have never owned a fully custom,and thinking about one.I love my .308,and have plenty of components,dies etc. However, since finding this site Ive read much about other great cartridges,and its tempting to say the least. 6.5x47 Lapua,what do ya think? Or 6.5X284? Ive never seen either one of these animals .Sounds like you guys like, and compare these to the .308 often. Would probably use it for rec. shooting mostly .maybe a tactical .....Really like the A-5 stock.also what action,Stolle Panda,or is there some place I can purchase a Tikka action and build on it.Would this be a good Idea? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Theres a pile of custom actions here in the venders site.
Check out guns of the week also. The loading forum has a pile of information on hand loading for all of the different.
I think this is the best site so far. There seems to be a lot of equipment to fit a variety of budgets. Stillers actions are very good along with most of the other brands. I really like his 700 series custom remington clone with tight specs. you could build a really nice benchrest or tactical rifle on one. lawtons are really nice too. It's your choice
I hope this helps

I Would like to shoot some longer distances,maybe 600yds. and out.This F class looks really Fun, if I can find a shoot in my area. It would also be nice to have a semi versatile rifle. .......Hey GerryM,I Like those Lawton Actions also,have you owned any?

Thank you Lynn,will I be able to reload for that on my rcbs rockchucker,Is it a short or long action cal.,And are components readily available?I was kinda leaning that way .Or the lapua.

I would say,

First find yourself a competent and honest gunsmith.

He will let you know what action will work best for your needs. Experienced smiths are versatile. he will also be realistic on how long your build would take. I know some people who have waited up to 24 months for an action, but they were ok with that. There are a lot of things to consider with a custom.
I have a 308 and a 6br both designed for long range shooting. When its real windy and i want accuracy,first shot hit)i go for my 308. When i want precision,Tight groups) i go for the 6br. For me the 308 seems easier to dope the wind with. A 6.5 284 would be awesome but there hard on barrels so you would a few per year if you shoot a lot. Good thing most people dont realise is that all these calibers have the same boltface. Wich means you could have multiple barrels.

Thanks fella's,I talked to a smith in Pa. yesterday after reading some more gun of the week review's.He was very helpful/patient. I'll heed your advice about the longer action/switch barrels setup.

VERDICT=Mc Tooley stock,bat mb action,kreiger barrel,6.5x284,jewell trigger,...my reasoning is 1000 rds brl life = .50cents a shot for a $500.00 barrel.And will do a switch setup.Havnt decided other cal. yet.
