I sympathize with ya Popkes ... I've got a brother in Sheridan. Use to be a nice little town but the far westerners (not to mention Coloradans) moving in there with their Learjet commuter vehicles want to make it look like California. The places we used to set up Elk camp years ago are nearly cleared of timber and overrun with "hunters" who ride machines and couldn't find an Elk (or other game) without an outfitter tying the critter to a tree for them.J.d. IMHO hunting before June 15 in most areas is exceedingly cruel. To shoot moma prairie dog and leave the pups to starve to death in the den is as cruel and cold as you can get. Besides as sport hunters our objective is not total extermination of the dogs.

I don't have issues with shooting pdogs to somewhat control populations, however, I have HUGE issues with shooting pdogs then taking pictures of blownup carcass' and posting them on forums etc!!! What is with some of you that apparently need to show proof that you went pdog hunting and a 55BT from a 22/250 is lethal on a 3# rodent? I have as much respect for a pdogs life as a deer, elk, coyote or anything else. Just because you are a coyote or pdog doesn't mean you deserve a slow, painfull and lingering death!!!!! A well placed bullet is more humane than poison or mange but some bunny huggers will argue that natures way is the best! Don't kill as many as you can and then glorify the taking of those lives by feeding the ego's of you and your buds with closeup photos of gore! We all know that yer a 'bad azz killer' without posting pics!
Well, off my soapbox. I am surely not a 'perfect' person but I don't/won't exploit the death of any animal for entertainment! Sure many of you will make fun of the way I see things anymore but then again you will need a pic to prove it right? Can't feed your ego if you don't!
Must have been a dozen or more vehicles in town last night of out of state 'bad azz's'. Guess the hail and heavy rains washed some of them off their dog towns for the night. Good reason for more gas and refreshments anyhoo. Should be some good internet pics and stories next week on the net showing what a dead dog shot from FIVE HUNDRED YARDS looks like!!!!

SD Whirlewind, I hope you weren't addressing your previous post to me. Because none of what you said pertains to me. I can reliably, cleanly kill dogs out to 350 yards and I restrict my shots to that range. With the bullets that I shoot even a hit in a back leg results in a clean kill due to the explosive expansion of varmint bullets at high velocity. I really enjoy long range shooting, but do so only on paper, and I don't drink alcoholic beverages at any time, don't take pictures either. I consider hunters that act like those in your post or my previous post to be slob hunters.

My big gripe is those who make/take desperation shots seeing wildlife as just a target and in the same light as a paper target and have no care nor concern for their pain and suffering from a wound and not a humane kill! Shooting at extreme ranges is one thing, bragging about it on the net etc is another. Who gives a flip how far you shot? Really, are you guys that vain or full of yourself that it matters to strangers you will never meet??? Not to mention the impression and 'ammunition' it gives to the likes of PETA, Humane Society etc about how blood thirsty, self serving and self absorbed we as hunters and shooters are!! What is the purpose of posting 1/3 of a pdog you shot? To convince others you are a real man or is it a fettish? Yea, I know, you don't care about them or how you portray your narcissistic personality, it is cool, what men do and helps with regulating your testosterone levels. A great percent of us are our own worst enemy when it comes to firearms, hunting and shooting!!!
Now I am done whinning and bitching. Won't change things or probably anyones mind or attitude!! Just wished the shoe was on the other foot sometimes so some would understand how the local residents are affected. Most don't care as it is all about them and what 'they' want and the he** with the locals and kids that grow up here! Besides they honestly believe that they 'saved' the rancher and community from certain demise had it not been for them, their ammo stash, their money and elite skills!
Just a little quick note. The land owners don't care at all if the prairie dog is pregnant, a baby, wounded, crippled, poisoned, deaf, post traumatic stress, or whatever and I agree. They don't let u shoot them because they get lonely and like visitors. The reason u r allowed there is for lost grass and holes that break legs of livestock that are his livelihood. All the blood and guts don't matter to him I can assure u. If that is too real then go f-ing cry. Pdogs will destroy a mans lively hood and that is what matters. If clipping a leg off one gives u nightmares go pet your cat. Coyotes and all other predators get the same treatment and always will. Until all the bunny huggers ruin all this country. What do you say when a coyote kills a calf? I'm sure you ain't seen that. It's real humane sweetheart. U like wolves too? Out of touch and out of place some people are. THAT is the problem. Several tourist traps on I-90 let u pet and feed tame ones? Go there if your conscience is getting the better of u. Everyone prefers a pink mist perfect kill, me too, but crap happens. I had a rancher in South Dakota tell me of a meeting he attended about Prarie Dogs and the question posed to the rancher audience was how many have livestock step in a hole and were injured.

JD, you tell it correctly. Cattle eat & need grass. Prairie Dogs need & eat grass. They are competing for the same resource.
Ranchers poison them, toxic for all and expensive. Guy who shoots them costs nothing for landowner. Blue state lead kills them just as dead. Me if I can hit 2-3 w 1 22-250, well thats very efficient. never exterminate w / lead, only plague.

Yea; It's fun blowing up prairie dogs. That's why you come out here and pay for it. If you don't have a good time shooting them, watching them {careful here} blow up?? Why?? For the "hunt". BULL. We laugh and have a good time. Spotting can be as much or more fun than pulling the trigger. We practice reading wind, hold overs, temprature and humidity adjustments, and just plain accuracy.

Wyo260, I have no desire to live in any of the states you mentioned but if we gave them back to the Indians, I can guarantee you that your grocery bill will increase substantially.
