Need some advice on hunting Prairie Dogs

Wow, really? Poor Indians. Is this more of the white guilt I see everywhere? Don't forget about the poor Mexicans that had about all the western USA. I'm not a history major but I know what your sayin. Boohoo. Most countries have a similar history. Wtf does this have to do with anything. I know the people will keep coming more and more and there ain't nothin nobody's gonna do about it. But until the first amendment is gone I'm gonna say what many here think. I make no apologies for what I think or how my country wronged the Indians Mexicans or women not voting or the Chinese who built the railroads or japs during WWII. I like my country. I'd rather give all fifty states back to the Indians than keep watching liberals gain power. I have lived amongst many Indians and I got no beef with them. They're fun to party with. I have a tribal member with me in the pickup as I type! In fact we (the tribal member and i)were shooting pdogs last week! Cheers.

I guess there are all kinda of experiences.

I believe that much of ND & MT are public land60++% Someone correct if wrong.

Drive E or W on the interstate and there is barbwire from E ND line to W MT line--hundreds of miles--both sides of the road. But isnt it PUBLIC?? Oh someone, leased it for 10 cents per acre.. So much for public, and so much of the public dont give a xxxx. They are already arriving here from 'downstate' for the holiday weekend. Horrah for us and to xxx with you.

If you dont believe 'border control' is important ask those Indian friends. But they are now laughing all the way tom the banks with their casino 'earnings'.

j.d., you seem to speak from experience (none good and getting worse) and I would be the last to disagree. Only you know what the situation is for you. I have been fortunate to shoot on ranches time and again, and none have the rancor you have. Personally, I think ranchers think I'm a bit nuts to shoot good ammo at a rodent. But there are lots of PDs and a guy who shoots them, not the cattle, closes the gates, reports on the fences and stock tanks, - with appreciation of being allowed on hard earned land- remains welcome
in many areas. Sounds like you are being priced off your own areas, and that seems unfair. I will say, I run my own business,
and I gave up the idea of fair quite a while back. I now work with what is...

Tell you what. If someone gives me a call, I will put them on dogs till they're sick of it. Just to show I'm not the bad guy. I'll take them out for a couple days. Chances are the person I meet will be my newest friend. I'm not sure how to put my number out there without having the world bugging me. Let me know if there is a way. This is not the point. I'm not making my point again. People from urban areas (urban by my standards) have no idea or respect for the way of life in which I speak. Some New Yorker calls me I'll take them out, and probably have fun, cultural exchange. Whatever. The end of what I hold dear is soon to be over. Oops I remade my point. Ranchers are nice. They will usually let you hunt. That's how people are out here. Just leads to situations that I foresee as being negative to me and mine. Who live and work here. Eventually we will have the same problems that the people that travel here see in the places they travel FROM to shoot here. More people, more problems. Gonna happen. This is now the playground for people in states that suck. Your state sucks, guns are hated, too many people, hunt deer with shotguns, gotta shoot at a "range". So come out west, where we fight to keep things free unlike your state, and clog up your dog towns. Hey, I'm from where u can't own a 10 round magazine or carry a pistol, I travelled out here to shoot pdogs, good person says ok, then thousands others come, then you got a business and the whole way of life that we hold dear changes. Internet says hey go to this place and everyone does. Get it. I'm out, cheers

Dam, I don't know what to say - you are a straight shooter, and you make alot of valid points. I might feel the same way if I was you.

I have been driving from Pa. and hunting in South Dakota for the past 25 years. I went there to visit a old Military buddy that turned me on to hunting there. All I can say is the SD people are great, well most of them. Until two years ago, I hunted on the same 4 ranches every year and developed some long range friendships. Then a local guy went around and rented hunting rights on the land I was using. It is now $500 a day to shoot there (only through him). Can't blame the people extra money helps out, not sure how much they actually get out of the deal. The plague has really taken a toll and the dogs are in bad shape, that hasn't helped. I have to admit that most of the hunters you run into out there seem not to care about the land they just want to shoot things. I guess the old ways are a changing, and not for the good. :'(

Unfortunately many areas go through the same cycles. There are opportunist that take advantage of anyone, be it hunting or fishing!! Here in Central New York State, we are seeing an influx of people buying land for different purposes, vacation, recreational, hunting and farming. It does place a burden on the locals. It makes it harder for us to afford our land(increased values and higher taxes) and we loose our old hunting lands, primarily deer and wood chucks. This is nothing new, makes it very difficult to access land or water to fish.

Just finding a spot to target shoot is becoming harder as more land is developed. Many city folk coming out to the country, shooting is becoming a no no in an area that generations have hunted.

Sad, but life!

I’ll jump into this discussion. I live in La Jolla, California. The beaches are great here, but come Spring and Summer this area becomes overcrowded. The beaches and restaurants are both too crowded for my liking. Friends who come to visit me, have driven around for an hour and were not able to find a parking spot, and my driveway is occasionally blocked to where I can’t get in or out. All of this is done by people who do not live here. What do I do, I escape and drive to Pinedale, Wyoming to go fishing and prairie dog hunting. Thankfully, the people of Pinedale, welcome me.

Rus, stop in at the local coffee shop in small towns early am and you'll find the older ranchers having coffee. They will give you good intel, at least have for me.

Moorcroft Wyoming comes to mind. Happy shooting, headed out myself June 1. Post some of your info, finds and adventures. Too many dogs? Barrels easily replaced. :)

Also had an awesome Lakota Sioux guide some years back. Super guy, dependable with good access, and I
don't think I ever saw so many PDs since anywhere since. Think it was just lucky timing on res, no poison.

This is the best way in the SW too. Its not hard to find a rancher that isn't happy with Pdogs. I'd recommend sourcing a few holes and planning an extended stay too. I've found that after the first few are taken, the others stop popping up quickly reducing the number of shots available.

Funny you say moorcroft. I live 12 miles from there. Merle Haggard "Are the good times really over for good?" And "Rollin down hill like a snowball headed for hell". You won't catch me intruding in California. Ever! Whoever that was from that state, should just move here, promise he'd fight to keep our state unlike his, and we'd be good. One guy said"you shoot a few times and they all go down their hole". Weird? I wonder sometimes if they have been shot at (and missed) a lot? Hmm. Anybody with a lick of sense knows you can't shoot out a town. It takes plague or poison. But u can train them to be real skiddish. From lots of pressure. Lots of towns near county roads where u get one shot proves that. Sometimes there are dozens in sight until u stop and so much as get out of the pickup. I just wish tourists would go to Jackson or Cody or Yellowstone and pet buffalo and look at old faithful or whatever they do there, and quit ruining the places us backwoods hick bitter clingers like to frequent. But like I keep saying for some reason, can't do nothin about it, except bitch on this thread. Least populated state in the union, and still too many? Well that's all for now, gotta finish reloading for the long weekend. Hope to see nobody this weekend in the dog towns around the MOORCROFT area. Weather forecast looks like hail? Cheers. Peace Out

Same thing here in northwest SD. 80%+ of the deeded land was poisoned when the state put the pdogs on the endangered list about 10yrs back because landowners were afraid of what would come next and were tired of the phone calls all winter long, gates left open, ruts when muddy, garbage and trespassing etc. Since with the draught and economy almost 100% have been poisoned now. Public land was then overrun with roughly 100 out of staters every summer, some camping right on the towns to 'claim' them for a week or more at a time. They seem to think the nonresident license allows short term ownership or at least and exclusive lease during their visit here!! On the Grasslands there are usually at least 2 related cattle deaths and 4-6 cripples, wounds etc. How do they know you ask?? A metal detector and a scalpel! Bovine usually don't ingest copper jacketed lead voluntarily!

Local kids have nothing to shoot anymore because what survives is nowhere close to 22 range! Mostly rude blue staters who 'claim' the town as theirs while here and run anyone else off. You say something in threads like this about how out of staters have affected what the local residents had and get a pile on from those who have never had something they coveted since a teenager taken away by strangers who have NO concern or care other than what THEY want! These individuals will react on the net just like I have found in person, with snide remarks, name calling, threats and obnoxious comments even if your wife is along.....and they are then offended when they email me and I won't/don't invite them out for a freebie hunt! Makes me the selfish b*stard I have found out more than a dozen times the last 10yrs or so.lol

So I will volunteer to take the verbal internet beat down with you because I know exactly what you mean and I usually make it a point to never respond to these posts because the end is always the same. It seems they expect open arms, hugs and kisses and attaboys from the rancher they saved from starvation! Have yet to encounter just one pdog hunter posting on the net that 'understood' what it would be like to loose THEIR favorite hunting spots because of money etc. Worthless, lazy piece of work down the street a block and a half 'guides' for such and has been arrested at least once for taking money and sending guys to USFS land and/or won't pay landowners after he gets access.

I was out twice 2 yrs ago with virtually no shooting and once last year and hesistant both yrs because of the drought. Haven't been out this year either other than a small town on my way home 2wks ago 1/4 mile off the hwy. So wild I had 6 head shots in 45 minutes. After 2 severe fires around here the last 2yrs both exceeding 12K+ acres(the last started by USFS on controlled burn 6wks ago) I won't take a chance of burning out a bunch of ranchers but that concern doesn't seem to bother the 'nonresidents'!!! Has made all the landowners completely paranoid but now with a bit of rain hopefully they can relax a bit?

Well said more than I was going to and know the outcome but just letting you know that you aren't the only one feeling like you do. Different state, same problems!

We all squawk about having our our little piece of heaven to hunt on and we all complain about strangers intruding. But our ancestors did that very thing to the American Indian. And none of us are willing to give this country back to the Indians.
Hey as far as I am concerned the Native Americans can have North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa , Nebraska and Kansas Back. Those areas serve no real purpose for me!!!!! :)

Sure seems like the good ol' days are over. Same with deer hunting in the Midwest, started to be all the rage 10 yrs ago. I listen to gun hunters stand around and complain about the lack of big bucks after just getting done with hanging a bunch of 1.5yr old bucks. Ignorance is rampant.

SD used to be awesome for PD's in the early 90's. I have a few places still but it's getting harder, NO WAY I would ever take anyone to my spots, just too dam hard to find good areas and fresh dogs.

Please note that I am not saying YOU but we and our.
Our ancestors gave the Indians the land that they considered worthless. But if our ancestors found something worth anything then we wanted the land back. A good example is the Black Hills which were given to the Indians until gold was discovered there.

Wyo260, I have no desire to live in any of the states you mentioned but if we gave them back to the Indians, I can guarantee you that your grocery bill will increase substantially.

Yeah, I like the west side of all those states, but Iowa. Wyoming could always barter fossil fuels for food. If they didn't we would all starve in about a week. Plus we need lots of beer and whiskey comin in, oh and women, I think that's it? Outside of all that, we got this shit. Why the hell would Indians want the responsibility of takin over a state? All they gotta do now is hang out and wait for free money to come in. There's already gambling in the black hills? Maybe in the end they won!!!! I got no real problem with most injuns. Liberal town folk from far away cultures are the ones that suck. Should hire a few injuns to get the war paint on and scalp a few of them jackasses. I bet they'd freak if a band of painted up warriors came over the hill hootin and hollering. That would be cool. Imagine the stories the survivor would tell when he returned to California. The only survivor, someone has to spread the word! I want to thank the people who have dared to voice their unpopular opinions like me. Gives me hope. This thread went nuts. The truth has no agenda. Gotta go get my head dress, later.

J.D Popkes,
Really? I also happen to live in Wyoming. I don't know where you moved here from, but not many people that have lived here long, share your attitude. Sounds like you have not done a very good job of getting to know your neighbors if you have to pay to hunt. You moved here from another state and now want to keep others out?
Dumb ***.

I don't pay to shoot pdogs? I get to shoot them about wherever. What I am saying is...........ready, it won't be like that for long!!! And yes I am a dumb___. I am not familiar with alma? Are we shooting and drinking beer, or is this a fistfight invitation. Or all three, heh heh. Did u mean alva?

Sincerely, dumb___

Meant alva. been coupla years, forgot. fistfight, nah or any other. Nope. sling lead only at PD's. :) shoot 1st & beer 2nd.
long drive from blue state. Never met a guy from WY I didn't like. Driving from Moorcroft to Hulett 3 yrs ago, truck headlights went out- I didn't know the fuses burned out from the HID lamps I had installed (dumb ) , after many hours running, burned the wires, and 8 pm no lights. nowhere near a town. walked to a house 1 mile, as too dark to drive. Fellow there said I'll drive in front of you so you can see (pitch dark now) 30 mi back to Moorcroft. then he drove 30 miles BACK to his home. Would not take a penny for gas. Said do the same for next guy. Turns out the motel we stayed at was 10 yds from BN line and the trains ran all nite. I'll pm ya.
