Need some advice concerning the 6mm Norma BR

I currently have a Savage 12 BVSS chambered in 308 Winchester. I want to turn this into a 6mm Norma BR .272 neck and use a Pac-nor barrel. I want the same contour barrel as the factory varmint and I am planning to have it finished at 26 inches. I want a 3 groove barrel with a 1-8 twist to shoot the Hornady 105 A-max and other bullets like it. How do I determine which barrel nut I have on the gun? I know Jackie's test isn't done, but how long of a barrel should I consider? I plan to use this rifle for infomal target shooting, groundhogs, and maybe a deer or two.

Hi. If you have a large shank barrel there will be a "step-down" right in front of the barrel nut. If no step then a small/regular shank. I have a 6br pac-nor tube on order, Chris at pacnor recommended a 26" tube for the 6br. You might want to send in the nut with your order so they can get a precise fit. hope this helps. dcl

dont wory here in Australia we reccomend a 26-28" barrel i have a 6mm Dasher and its 26" they dont foul at the muzzle as bad as longer barrels the 30" barrels seem to pick more up and the 28" barrels seem to be the longest that dont foul to much. Good luck with your project it should be awsome if you send the barrel thats the other option if you cant get the nut off you could send the barreld action im sure they could set it up for you.

I have exactly that combination and when I shot the barrel out of the original barrel, I had it rebarreled to 6BR. I chose a larger diameter barrel for the weight and heat dissipation but it fit the original stock after some wood removal. I decided to not use the barrel nut method of attachment, but had the gunsmith cut threads for the action seating as in "normal" rifles.

I shoot F class at 300 meters and went with a 1:8 twist Shilen barrel. I have since set back to back club records for F Class, perfect 600's with 42 and then 44 x's, so the gun will shoot. The chamber reaming is pretty important. I went with a no turn neck and a leade that puts a 105gr Berger about .01 in the lands.

This was my first venture into competitive rifle shooting and the Savage was a great way to get started.

I have a BR rifle built from my Savage 12 BVSS-S in 6BR. This one has a 1.250" diameter barrel and is mounted "Remington style". I would not do that again. My new one will use the barrel nut. Just my preference.

As far as I know all Savage .308s are built with the small receiver ring so you should have a 1.055" diameter barrel thread and standard nut. Check the Sharp Shooters site for info on how to check your barrel size.

The only limit to barrel length is how long can Pac-Nor make it. In point-blank BR we worry about making weight, but you shouldn't have that problem. For target shooting 28" seems to be a popular number and I think 26" will work, too. For a "carry gun" you might want less. My BR has 21" barrel but I shoot light bullets with 1:14 twist.

I like the BVSS stock and would recommend you do a good glass bedding job with it, get a good SSS or Rifle Basix or Timney trigger and enjoy.
