Need recommendation for Neck Turner

I have been shooting F-Class for several years but have not tried turning the necks. I shoot Lapua .308 Win cases.

Need a recommendation for a good neck turner. I don't buy huge supply of cases at a time, 100-200 so don't need anything fast, but want accuracy.

Without getting too much $ involved.
Good for your use with 100-200 cases

I am leaning toward the PMA Model A. Sent Pat an email as I need to settle something else before I place the order. All previous communications with Pat have shown a very positive customer service mentality.
Hope to have it settled and the neck turner on the way soon.

Well after looking at the 21st Century I may need to call them and talk to them. I like the idea of a lathe type system to feed into the cutter. Never done neck turning so don't know how much of a difference that makes. I would assume that it does. Also not sure if the PMA has a lathe also, so need to call and speak with Pat also.

things to consider, necks come out best when cut in at least 2 steps, a rough cut to within about .001/.0005 of desired, and then a finish cut....which can be done twice.
to make it all simple and repeatable, use TWO neck turners. use 2 of the same make and the expander step is simpler. trim to length so the shoulder cut is the same on all. k&m's case holder is good when driven by a drill, drill press, lathe, small motor.
low speed less heat a good lube
i do this even on a fun 308 win target rifle......0.014 necks about 1/2 moa at 600

PMA has a top notch case lathe. I use this and a couple Pumpkin neck turners. If I didn't have the Pumpkins I would use the PMA neck turner too. Both great tools. Pat is good to deal with also.

Has there ever been any clarification on whether or not neck turning is "modifying" the case?

Since there have been neck-turned cases at every national and international level championship since F/TR was first incorporated into F-class... and not once have they ever been even challenged... I'd say 'yes', for all practical purposes.

The 'unmodified' bit is commonly interpreted as "don't run an 'improved' (e.g. Ackley) version of the cartridge". The 'intent' is to avoid enhancing the ballistic performance (case volume, muzzle velocity, etc.), not to hamper accuracy. That has been understood at every level of competition that I've participated since the beginning of F/TR.

2 turners set up as 6bra1k mentions is a good way to go, but with the percise adjusting of the PMA tool not necessary, but convienent. A drill with a case holder works just fine. You will learn the turning speed will determine the finish you get. Die wax works fine as a lube.

I started with a PMA and haven't had a reason to change. I'm up to 4 different mandrel diameters and 3 shoulder angle cutters. Every neck comes out smooth as glass!

Do most purchase the expander and case holder with the turner? Seems that the mandrel in the turner would require a specific ID on the case for best performance.

I use a Die Bushing to under size my neck then a Gage Pin to expand to the final dimension for reloading. I assume I will need to do the same for turning. Already have a die to hold the Gage Pin so will probably use that.

I have a Lee case holder from my very first trimming, well before F-Class. Wonder how much better the ones offered by PMA or 21st are in comparison.
