First Time Neck Turner Help

I am attempting my first batch of cases tonight. I am basically trying to do a light cleanup of the necks. I noticed on a few rounds, I would check the case neck on my runout gauge before turning and basically got no movement. After turning I would get .002" movement on the same neck. Am I doing something wrong here? It's not happening on all cases. I am using a K&M neck turner, power drill and 6.5 Creedmoor Hornady cases.

Did you expand the necks with a K&M 6.5 neck expanding iron first. If not there may be a little slop in the fit.

I turned 100 Dasher cases yesterday and also had slight "wobble" using the cordless drill. Don't fight the wobble and let your hands move with it.

Once you shoot it it will likely straightedn everything out.

Good Shooting.

I was using the K&M expander. The neck wall is uniform now because it measures the same on all sides. I guess I will just size them with my bushing die now to the tension I want and shoot them. The guys at K&M said that can happen and shooting them should bring them in line.

Jpistolero02,
Are you turning new /unfired brass or once fired brass? On new brass just turn the necks to the thickness you want then load them up. When they are fired they straighten up. Think of your rifles chamber as the last form die the brass goes through. Until it is fired it is simply a piece of brass that has been formed up to work (usually) in any rifle chambered for that cartridge. When you check the fired round right out of the chamber the run out should be .000 or so. Check the cartridge case as it is run through the neck or full length die ( check the neck about midpoint with the concentricity gauge and make sure the dial indicator has at least .005-.015 preload on the object you are checking so the probe does not come off the neck while measuring). After seating the bullet in the cartridge case check the run out on it as close to the bullet /case mouth junction as you can get the probe on the dial indicator with out touching the case mouth. 0 to .005 run out we have found usually has no effect on accuracy. If you note the run out after each step you can find out which of your dies is causing the issue and concentrate there. Some times something as simple as backing the screw in the lock ring out away from the threads of the die can make a big difference. Drill wobble when you are turning necks by power is common and will not affect at thing usually. Because you only have .0005 between the turning mandrel and the case neck at most if the neck turning and expander mandrels are properly matched. Sinclair mandrels are : expander is .001 under bullet diameter +/- .0005. Neck turning mandrels are .002 under bullet diameter +/- .0005 Just make sure all the necks are being turned to what you want
