Need help with cal. choice

I have a remington 700 long action with 06 bolt face and a krieger barrel in 6.5 with 1-8 twist. What would be a good caliber choice that is compatable with the components I have. I allready have a 6.5x55 and would like to get a little hotter than that. thanks c

Could go 6.5-06.

Your long action screams for a 6.5X284 chamber . it works great in long action provided the chamber is done right . more pop than the 06 and 2 shades up from the 55.

Got to agree with rifler. Simply love the 6.5-284, barrel burning attributes and all. Works great on a LA receiver.

I have a 6.5-284 reamer and 250 rns of new brass but all I have read about the short barrel life has put me off. I also have a 6.5-06 reamer but cant see the big advantage over my 270. All things considered Im leaning toward the 284. ;D

1500 rounds before you lose 1/2 minute of angle at 600yds. in my target rifles .2200 rounds before i replace my hunting barrels . The Rifler

6.5x55 AI.....you won't break the bank buying good brass. Just as fast as the x284.

i also would say 6.5x284, but if that cal does not spark you up then you could try a .280ai!? sorry that would require another barrel!

Any 6.5 cartridge that is significantly higher performance than the 6.5X55 will be a little hard on the barrel. The 6.5-284 does not need peak loads to perform well. As Michael said, 1500 rounds is a reasonable expectation. Nitriding the barrel is an option that might buy you some more barrel life, too. The 6.5-284 has the advantage of fine Lapua brass and, if you prefer, little to no case prep. Seems like a practical choice that meets your criteria and takes good advantage of the LA.

When I'm looking at a build I start with what bullet I want to use, then what velocity, third what case or cases will give me the package for the action. Your comment about 270 Vs 6.5-06 has to do with the match bullets available. 6.5-06 Vs 6.5-284 they have about the same capacity, so velocity is close. I used the 6.5-06 for the National Match Course in the early 80's and it served me well, two aggregate medals at the state match's.
