need help with 243.

just got a new remm 700 243. it's the one with the hs percision stock. trade for it, it has a nicon 3-9 scope, nothing to shout about but i liked it, i got it for a still.
i thuoght i might try to make a deer/varmit rifle, but i also thought i might make a factory class bench rest for a few local shoots.
going to bed the action and already have a jewell trigger in it, i need some load data. what shoots for target and what bullets do people prefer for big game.
not really worried about the one load for all, but haven't ever owed a 243. lots of 6 br and 6 ppc.
i hear the range it about 300 yards which is fine, but what powders?
going to change scopes of corse but for right now i shooting what is on it.

Well you are half right 300yards? if you are a vg shot, if your load is tuned just right? if your rifle is bedded and maybe free floated. Then you can extend that range alot further if you do your part. As for loads for Deer maybe speed goats? but not much bigger game. I have used a 243 for years not because I didn't like the recoil of the other high power rifles, but I just like the caliber. I would recommend bullets above 90 grains. If your rifle is a 1-10 twist, which i think it is. Don't like recomending loads as each rifle is different. I have used IMR-4350 as well as IMR-4831, start at half way throught the load scale and worrk up a little at a time. Check for flattened primers, or hard extraction these are sign you load is on the warm side.. I used the lyman reloading manual from the stone age but that was all that was around with excellent information. I always tried to use the accuracy loads listed and the barrel listed, but so many variables. (Velocity doesn't make for accuracy). Good Luck Lou

I have one for my son and we are shooting H4350 in it with 95g Btips for deer and 85g Seirras for varmints. Did shoot two deer with the Seirra and both are dead. Did not exit though.

i have some 105 a-max and some 90 gr bergers. thought about both. also have h414 on hand. thought i might start there.
as of right now it shots 1 inch groups with factory rem. core locks. i hope it does better.. i think it well.
i have a 223 in the same rifle, shooting a 53 gr bullet. it shoots very well, under a 1/8 at 100 yards. couldnt ask for more out of a factory.
that one reason i wanted this rifle, thought it might be a good one. but all are different.

You've seen the excellent article here on the .243 Winchester?

Good stuff...

Your new Remington 700 .243 has a 9 1/8" twist barrel which spins the bullet one revolution for every 9 1/8" length of barrel travel: 2.63 revolutions within your 24" barrel. A 90 grain Swift Scirocco II bullet, with its .419 Ballistic Coeficient (BC), should offer you extreme accuracy out to 400 yards with minimal gravity drop, since the bullet should reach-out and touch your target in .4 seconds with a muzzle velocity of about 3325-3350 fps depending upon ambient temperature. For these loads, I trust Hodgdon H4350 with this great projectile. Next I will experiment with Hodgdon H414, a slightly faster-burning powder, for perhaps a few more logical hunting yards with the class-act Scirocco II bullet.
