Need help picking rifle for beginer non-match benching

I am an avid shooter and can out shoot all of my factory rifles. I want to spend this summer shooting a rifle capable of out shooting me. I may even carry it out dog hunting as a second gun. I don't have huge amounts of cash for a custom gun. I would say my top end is $1500 for the rifle.

We don't have much available locally but I have been looking at a Cooper Phoenix in 223 and 22-250. I have been told you can put a Jard trigger in with only a few ounce wight to make it more of a bench gun and I believe i can make an adapter to widen and smooth the forend. I can get this for about $1100.

Does anyone have a better gun recommendation or caliber.

kmartin,

You need to check out used benchrest gun. Most will be PPC's, but you can have the boltface opened up to a 308 bolt face, and go with many other rounds. I have done two to 6BR. Also the PPC makes a great varmint round. Look for the on this site, Benchrest matches, Benchrest. com, Bob White's keep many in you price range.
