Need help picking HB Remington 700 308 for up to 600yds

Looking for a rifle for my winter home instead of traveling with one. I'm familiar with and have a couple 308s and 3 Remington 700s/40Xs so trying to stay with them. I'm narrowing down to Remington like the PSS 24-26" 1/10" barrel, Milspec with 1/11.25" 24" 5r barrel OR 700 VSSF with 1/12" 26" SS barrel. The VSSF is cheaper than the others by about $150-$200. I know it needs a stock. Bullets used will be 155-175gn for a long time( have large quantity). Possible F class use to Max distance in my 2 states is 600yds. Is a 5r barrel worth the difference? 2 inches in length? Another possibility is a used 308 40x with a 1/12, 27 inch barrel. Opinions are welcome

If you are really serious about F class forget about factory rifles. Go straight for a target action and a 30 inch barrel and a good custom made stock. For out to 600 you could go with a straight rem 700 action and put a 28 inch custom 11 twist barrel. Shoot 168gn in F class and 185 Jug or OTM for any hunting you may do. It will be competitive.

Unfortunately any Remington factory barrel today is a crap shoot. The 5R barrels seem to up the odds of a good one. Still no guarantee of a good tube. How lucky do you feel? :D:D:eek:

Eurooptic has barreled action 308's with the 5r barrel for a darned good price, then you can pick your stock and optic and be relatively good to go. I've thought of doing that for an easy to use range gun.

Thanks guys. EuroOptics website was not too helpful but they are day trip distance to me. Will investigate. Yes Paul, Remingtons QC problems are noted but I’ve been lucky. 4 out of 5 Rem HB’s have been .5-.7 MOA after bedding. If I get serious my 40XC has done .5@200yds with FGN 175s off the bench. It’s going to be a while before I can hold it prone that well and read wind to take advantage of that. Budget for now is under $1k for rifle.

WOW Thanks. I was thinking of Bob White. Was going to look him up. He is driving distance to me and has interesting stuff on that list. Yes R64 looks like the deal.
1/13 barrel, thats for 155gn bullets?

I just recently broke in the barrel and started my DOPE log on my work sniper rifle. It is a Remington 700 PCR and has been surprising me for its accuracy. My second group after I did barrel break in was a five shot 1/2 inch group at 100 with 168 FCGMM. If that style of rifle doesn’t bother you, it is doing well for us so far and my other team mates rifle is shooting same level of accuracy 5/8 inch at 100
