need help-optics quest. and problem

what's the farthest anyones ever got a ground hog with a 16 power scope and also. Anyone ever have problems with a sighttron sII big sky? i have a 6-24 x 42 power and I swear it loses zero every so often. I'm not sure what to do with it. Is this a weak scope? I have a elite 6500 tactical but it's only a 16. it's tough but 24 power is nice on varmints. this is driving me nuts. I'm getting ready to alumahyde a gun soon.

I don't know if there is a recorded record made with a 16x.... but think of it this way.

Looking at a ground hog through a 16x scope at 1,600 yards, is like looking at one at 100 yards with a 1x scope.

Could you hit a ground hog at 100 yards with a 1x scope?? I could (all day long)... so could 99% of shooters.

For long range ground hogs, it's not the scope power that does it - it's overcoming the other stuff - wind, and mirage, that brings them down.

I used a 4.5 - 14 earlier this year, and I didn't mind it at all with shots pushing 400 yards. You would be better off with a 16x that holds zero over a 24x that didn't

Now THAT is a wise man!!!

Most of my varmint scopes are between 14x and 16x. I've found that to be the optimum power range for me. The longest shot I made on a ground hog was 320 yards but that's because I shoot off shooting sticks which limits my capability so I usually don't try anything beyond 300 yards. Incidently, where I hunt, I rarely encounter any beyond 250 yards.

A friend of mine is a long range specialist and hunts in a different area than me where long range (beyond 300 yards) shot are more available. He uses a Leupond VX 3 20x and consistanly connects at ranges of 500 yards using a 22 250 shooting off a portable bench with sand bags. From what he has told me, a high quality scope (in the varmint category) with predicatable and repeatable adustments and ability to hold zero is more important than an extremely high magnification.

If you going to be shooting long range, you should test the scope's adjustments by shooting a group, then moving the turrents up one inch, shoot another group and see if you're about an inch higher, move up about inch, shoot a group, etc. then move back to you're orginal starting point and see if the group returns to zero.

exactly, lots of people are concerned about drop but few ask about deflection. gravity is consitant wind and mirage are not.

That would depend on how well your FL die matches your chamber. If you are talking about a typical one piece FL die, and a factory chamber, probably. If you are going to go that way, and are not turning necks, and/or have a lot of neck clearance, I would recommend you try a Lee Collet die. One piece neck dies, that have expanders are to be avoided.

Regarding the Sightron, why not send it back for a checkout? They are supposed to be guaranteed.

I'm going to mess with with it here shortly and see if it's all right or not. I noticed G. David Tubb ground his expander ball down on the reloading video.
