Need help identifying this action

I bought this rifle through an online auction for $150 several years ago. It said "22 Cal European Target Rifle", and had one small pic. When I got it, it turned out to be a 14 # Giant in 22-250. The barrel at the action is 1.25", the breach opening is 3", and the bolt dia. is .650" All of the markings on the action are in the pictures and there are none on the barrel. The trigger has just one screw at the front that is seen in the picture. The only way I've found to release the bolt out of the action is by dropping the trigger out of the bottom. It does shoot in the .1s at 100 even though there is some minor fire cracking in the lead and at the start of the rifling.

Thanks

Enjoy your BSA! I would suggest as it has no BSA logo, that it's one imported as a barreled action by Herters as the U9. These were sold with an awful stock without any saving graces, except that it made it easier to hold and kept the trigger from poking you in the eye. As for the bolt removal - push the trigger forward. It is often a matter of the last 5 thou that releases the bolt. Never easy. Richards Microfit made me a decent stock some years ago for my U9, which I still have. I fortunately found a BSA barrel in 243 to replace the rust collection that came with it, It's a good action. The camming/unlock is very strong - you should never get a stuck case. Good value.

Thanks to everyone. Many thanks. With the wealth of information you have provided I've been able to get some more detailed data from the web. In the pic you can see that it is in a benchrest stock that is some sort of composite material. It is well bedded for length of 22-250 complete.jpegthe action and the first three inches of the barrel. It's a 14 twist 26" long, and the scope is a cheap Accushot 8-32 but does a pretty good job ( though it looks like the Hubble on any other rifle I own I think it looks good here).

Did those rings come with it ? If not std weavers will not usually hold . They were made for parker hale roll off rings , if I remember correctly. Although on a 22-250 and a heavy gun , recoil is minimal. If you start having zeroing issues , check the ring to receiver fit first .

Thanks for the heads up, I'll definitely give it a closer look. But like you said, the recoil is not much more than my 22 Hornet. 14#s is a lot of dampener. The only load worked up for it so far is with 34 grain Dogtowns from MIdway. I was very surprised when I first shot it, expected a heavy kick and got a love pat.

Well upon closer inspection the action has been drilled and tapped for, and wears Weaver bases. Those Parker Hale rings must be huge as they are clearly 3/16" wider than the Weavers. You can see in the first pic that the rings are not attached to the Parker Hale grooves but are riding above it. I had never paid any attention to the original machined in mounting groves in the action. Thanks Ggmac.

It looks as if that action is like my Herter’s U9 BSA action. They have an integral machined dovetail mount similar to Ruger and Sako of which I also have several. No, they are not the same. Mine came with big, bulky, gaudy Parker Hale rings too. I finally bit the bullet and bought a set of Conetrol rings for mine. My rifle was a used 30-06 Deluxe version Harter’s U9 that someone did some butchering inletting around the action and trigger group. After glass bedding it, refinishing the stock, repointing the checkering, and a new Pachmeyer recoil pad it’s a fine rifle! My chamber has a bit of excessive headspace and as such will pop heads off the case on about the 3rd shot if resized to SAAMI spec. I just phantom shoulder the brass for the first shot and then only size them enough to fit just like you would do with a Wildcat chambering. I’d love to have several more of those actions. Passed on a 7mm Rem mag at Cabela’s a few years back, they were really proud of it, was standard wood and would rather have either another standard or small bold face. Great find!
