Need help getting,hBN) to stick on bullets

I have been using Moly for some time now and wanted to try,hBN) so I purchased 1 pound from Lower Friction. I have been tumbling moly in steel shot and it does a great job but the hBN I tryed tumbled for over two hours and when I took the bullets out the white powder just fell off in the towel I was using and the bullets looked just like when AI put them in. WTF is going wrong? has anyone else tryed to do this and if so how did you do? The hBN I used is .50 micron.
thanks

MODERATOR: hBN = Hexagonal Boron Nitride

I lay about 250 bullets onto a towel, spray them with brake cleaner, and rub them around in the towel. Once they dry, I toss 'em in the tumbler. I used to use copper bb's to aid in coating, but have since stopped.

I have been using HBN for about a month. The white powder that comes off on the towel is the excess HBN, you should have a translucent glaze looking coating on the bullet. I love HBN, it is SO much better than Moly or Danzac in every way. I got my HBN free over the Internet, but only one ounce.

the only thing i don't like about,hBN) is handling the slick little suckers. i think it's the best coating.

Thanks for the reply I will go ahead and try these out then. I was expecting at least some visual clue that the job was done.

What size particle hBN are you using? It makes a very big difference when using the size suitable for bullet coating.

Jumper,

I have a large quantity of hBN that was formulated for me. If you would like to buy some, let me know.

JRS--What is the particle size of the hBN I purchased from you? I just got done cleaning my bullets, fluffing, buffing, and drying them. I placed a bunch of clean copper plated BBs in one of my small pill bottles along with an adequate amount of the hBN I purchased from you and placed the pill bottles into my Midway vibrating case cleaner. I checked on them after about 30 minutes and they didn't look like they had much coating on them, so I let them run for somewhat over 2½ hours in the vibrating tub with some corn cob media in the tub to keep the bottles from making any racket.

Here's a photo of what the bullets looked like after I got them separated from the BBs using a metal strainer and dumped them on a towel. Sorry for the less than stellar photo quality.

Here's what they look like after I gently rolled them on a couple of soft towels to remove the excess hBN. They feel slippery, but sure don't look a whole lot different than bare bullets??? How do you tell if the coating stuck to the bullets? Is the slippery feeling the clue???? It sure was easier to tell if you got the coating on the bullets when I was using Danzac.

Hi Silverfox,
Your bullets look good, they are ready to load up and shoot. HBN is pretty much translucent at the normal coating thickness, but it is SLICK!
Good luck,
Jack

Silverfox,

Sorry for the late response. My wife is typing this for me. Both hands are in casts.

Yes, that is what the bullets look like. A bit of a frosty appearance. They should be slicker than snot.

Ok.. I have a question.. when switching from moly to HBn, will it change the load or should I be able to keep trucking on as usual?

FroggyOne2--I don't have the statistics on that one, but just to be safe, I would drop the charge weight back a little bit. That way you can be sure you won't have an explosive surprise! Work the loads up in weight little-by-little unless you have a load that is well below the maximum loads listed for that bullet, powder, etc.

I don't know how slick moly is, but I know Danzac and hBN make the bullets real difficult to grasp, so they are slicker the snot! That should mean it will take a bit more powder to maintain a particular velocity with these coated bullets than it did with bare bullets.

Of course it depends on the individual gun/load combination, but for my 308 Winchester I dropped 60 fps. I was previously using Danzac with that load, so for me HBN is slicker than Danzac.

JRS--Thanks for the response to my query. Sorry to hear about the casts on both hands. Is there a story about that you should be telling us?????
