Need help from someone in Wyoming

I am preparing for my first trip to the west (on Atlantic Ocean currently) to shoot yellow bellied marmots with custom wildcats from as far away from them as possible. May be there for months and would love someone that also liked to post these critters from afar. I am self contained except for a spotter buddy and guidance as to where to go, hopefully public land.I have been wearing out the eastern groundhogs. all my life and now I am retired and able to be anywhere for long periods. Any help will be appreciated.

If you want to shoot on BLM land take RT59 North of Douglas towards Wright. Go to the 49 mile marker and there will be some large antennas on your right. Make a right by the antennas. Plenty of land to shoot on there. You will need to get off the beaten path as most dog towns right off the road are heavily shot on. Dogs will duck if they see a vehicle stop.

Been 4-5 years since I've been there so get a map to make sure you are on land that is allowable to shoot on.

Good luck.

Marmot not prairie dogs

You raise a good point, though. Why marmots? P-dogs are far more plentiful (so you get a lot more shots), a more challenging target and are generally considered to be pests. I was shooting them on Monday and the ranchers were greatly appreciative of the effort.

Find your self, up in the Rocky Mountains. or maybe the Big Horn Mountains, could even be the Wind River Range. Most of which is public. They come out around June, and start to disappear about Sept. They like rocks to hide in and grassy slopes to gather in. Get up high and use your optics.

Marmots/rockchucks are plentiful in the west, not just WY. Some ranchers here have us remove them to save prime grass feed for their horses and cattle. They're everywhere near irrigated fields. I don't cruise the high country any more, leaving those boys alone now, but it's great shooting to stretch your rifle's legs up in the high sub-alpine scrub just above timberline.

Cooper 20VT and 32gr NBT's over RL-7.

not looking for plentiful, just measured quality LOONG shots with 22,24,26 calibers. No hot barrels wanted. I am used to shooting chucks and like the feedback I get from a hit.

When i finally get to Wyoming, it will be with a U-Haul truck!!

Been wanting to go to hunt elk and antelope. Wife doesn't want me to take a hunting trip there.
Claims (correctly) that i won't come back. :oops:
Like those guys at Yellowstone Ranch that keep dumping bodies in WY?

When you do come out shoot half of what you see as you could kill the whole family in a spot then no more shooting for years.

Yep^^^^^^ Back when I was young and liked killing things, we shot all afternoon on one slope.
There might have been one left alive. Age and experience teaches you alot. No yelow bellies on that slope for years. Hunters are conservationist's. {or should be}
