Need help finding tools

Hi Everyone,

I load mainly 22-250 and 30-06, I have found that my cartridges are not consistent in length, bullet tip to base, I would like to buy a kit to measure from the ogive to base, I see that Hornady makes kits to do this but I just can't find anyone in Canada that sells it, I would also like to buy the kit that allows me to measures head spacing, would you help me find a supplier, USA or Canada that sell them.

Thanks
God bless all
Jim

What neck of the woods are you in? If you've not got a shop nearby you're probably best off to order online direct from the manufacturer.

In Alberta you can try P&D in edmonton , they usually have a full selection of hornadys comparator tools in stock , they will also make modified cases out of your firformed brass on site for a small fee.

Have you tried Sinclair int. ? Are you wanting to measure cartridge Headspace, Wilson sell's a case gauge with Max and Min steps.

Places like sinclairs etc are hit and miss with regards to shipping across the border... I can get barrels from grizzly international yet they cant ship a reamer lol.

He is also on the east coast. A small family based business that curtails to all disciplines of shooting.

Hi Jim! The tools you mention can be readily made. In less affluent times I used a pistol cartridge case deprimed and slipped over the neck of the rifle case to measure shoulder to base with calipers. This allowed me to set cartridge heads space to .001" to .002"...... (.003" for hunting rifles.) The same thing can be done for measuring bullet seating depth. This would require drilling a piece of aluminum to an I.D. .002" smaller than bullet dia. then turned on a lathe to make it round. If you make the gadgets of steel they'll last a life time. I have a local automotive machine shop (also hunters & shooters) that make neat little tools for me on a regular basis. Maybe this will work for you. Good luck, Dale

I have found what I need at a place in Edmonton Alberta called P&D Ent. I placed an order today and gave my phone number so they could call to get my Visa number, I feel a little uneasy giving my number to someone who calls me, The people I dealt with were Chris and Malinda called. Has anyone bought from them?

Thanks
God bless
Jim

Jim i have dealt with P&D and have had good experiences... For a while they were the ONLY place that was actively bringing in powder when everyone else was content to just complain that they couldnt get any.. I understand your concern in this day and age however the folks at P&D will treat you rite.

If you can’t find the Hornady tool it’s not a big deal. If your gun is a bolt action all you really need is a dial caliper. Remove the bolt. Find a reference point on the back of the action to do your measurements from. Take about five of the bullet you plan to use, measure the length and get an average. Take a bullet, insert it in the chamber and push it in till it’s jammed in the lands. Using the back end of the calipers measure from your action reference point to the base of the bullet jammed in the lands. Call this the head depth. Remove the bullet and insert and seat an empty case in the chamber. Measure from your action reference point to the base of the of the case. Call this the base depth. Add the bullet length plus the head depth then subtract the base depth. This will give the COAL with the bullet jammed in the lands. With a bit of practice you can get very consistent measurements. Make a dummy round that length. Take your seater die apart and measure the distance from the base of the dummy round to where the seater collet makes contact with the bullet. The will give you a consistent, repeatable reference point for seating your bullets.

Call Mo Defina (Master Class Sports in Ct.- no website) and ask for one of his headspace guages and the Hornady comparator.
