I am going to try to keep this as generic as possible because I do not want to draw blame to anyone whether or not it is warranted. I would just like some advice on what steps to take from here on as my options seem very limited at this time.
I had a "Top Gunsmith" build a pre-64 model 70 for me. I used a barrel from one the top barrel manufacturers in a med. palma contour, 1 in 8 canted lands, a tactical style composite stocks from one of the top two stock makers. The action was trued and barrel installed and was pillared and bedded into the stock. As far as I know (which isn't much) The only thing that I could have done to attempt to improve accuracy any further would have been to have the firing pin bushed.
When I got the rifle and started load development I couldn't get the rifle to group. I talked to others with the same caliber and got lots of advice but could not get anything to work. I took the rifle back to the smith and he looked things over inside and out. Using a borescope nothing stuck out as a problem. He was going to shoot it himself to see what he thought but it was a general consensus with him and another guy that I might just have a bad barrel.
The gunsmith never had a chance to shoot the rifle and has since gone out of business. Now I am stuck with a rifle that still doesn't shoot and I suspect that any other gunsmith with avoid it like the plague. I figure that I am just out of luck with it and might as well buy another barrel, pick another gunsmith and start over. I wonder if it would do any good at all to try sending it to the barrel manufacturer to see if they would warranty it at all but I don't have any experience with this. I did contact the barrel company earlier when I was first having problems and they really didn't seem interested in my problem.
Any advice would be appreciated.
