need a super comfort gun sling

I am heading to Colorado in a few weeks and will be walking in the mountians for days. I need a more comfortible way to carry my 8# Remmy 7mag. My dad bought the Eberlestock X1 back pack ($179 and i really like it) but I already have a great back pack. I can not find a really good gun sling/harness to carry my rifle.

Any suggestions? Or should I just go ahead and get the X1 like my dad has?

Just make sure its got a lot of non-slip rubber or you'll be hatin' life in the high country. Especially with a pack on. Without the rubber style you will constantly be readjusting as it slips.

I've used just about every style of sling out there while hunting the rugged high country. The one I like best so far is by Butler Creek and its called the "V-Grip Sling"

I've used that one too. Won't work with a bipod cuz sling stud straps are too wide, and they are made of PLASTIC. Rifle bounces badly when moving fast because the rubber is so elastic. The thin strap gets really uncomfortable after a while to cuz the thin width concentrate the rifles weight on a smaller area. Dont waste your money on that thing

I wish they would come up with a sling that will stay in place when you have a pack on your back. I have tryed i don't no how many sling.

I've tried a bunch too and none have really been 100% successful.

Settled on the Uncle Mike's with elastic pad since it doesn't dig into my shoulder but it also tends to slip on the shoulder so I position the sling over my chest with the rifle across the back. This frees up with arms but won't work with a back pack. Also, it's cumbersome to quicky bring into action when stalking.

The rubber "claw" type does stay put of the shoulder but also digs into my shoulder in the warm summer month but is not a problem for winter hunting wearing a heavy coat. This might work for your purpose

Sure wish some bright guy would come up with something that is comfortable and functional.

Watching this post with interest. A friend used something similar to the Vellini when he was training for the Biathalon which works great if you don't have a backpack on. I have to find two slings for two Weatherby Vanguards that will keep the gun on your shoulder while wearing a backpack. My cousin and I have elk tags in the Isabel National Forest in 3 weeks.

I apologize, in my last post i mentioned Butler Creek's new "Gel Sling" as being my favorite. That is NOT it. My favorite is called the "V-Grip Sling" (also by Butler Creek). Complete rubberized pad sticks to your shoulder very well (even with a pack), very wide for comfort, and lightweight. It's the best sling around IMO and only costs $20

here's a link to see how it looks. Best sling around if hunting with a pack in the high country...or any style of hunting for that matter

I like the Super Sling, not padded. It is super simple to adjust, and comfortable when using a hasty sling technique. Ad to keeping it on your shoulder with a pack, use the chest strap on the pack over the sling, it helps, if ya are going to climb and need both hands, use the waist belt around the butt if the rifle and chest strap holding the sling. You would be surprised how well that will hold a rifle when climbing and busting brush. Hope it helps, good luck, good hunting, and good times!.

just received the v grip sling as a gift...have not worn it very much but already like it...have been keeping it on my ghog rifle..

Just recieved a couple of the Butler Creek V grip slings from Midway USA. Gonna use them for our elk hunt next week. I will post my impressions after our hunt but they appear to work very well "out of the box"...thanks BigDMT.

Spent a week in the Colorado high country and the slings worked great. I have a Jansport pack with padded straps and the Butler Creek V Grip worked great. Being a slope shouldered pencil neck, nothing wants to stay put on my shoulders so this was cool that it worked. Thanks again BigDMT.

No problem Jeff. Glad you liked the V-Grip.
They work great for me as well. Like I said before, I've tried them all and it's the best I've found so far for hiking. It's nice to be hiking and glassing and NOT having to worry about re-positioning your sling on your shoulder every 10-20 yards of hiking. Really stays put well and distributes the weight well for comfort.

And for only around $20, they really can't be beat :)
