Need a recipe for Case Lubricant

For years I have used RCBS Case Slick spray. No complaints except the price. Worked for ATK for a couple of years and could buy it at cost which was roughly 30% of retail. Just didn't buy up enough before I left.

I like the spray type because it's fast and gets plenty of lube in the neck. When I was not loading nearly as many rounds as I am now, I used Lee case lube. Would even put it on a Q-Tip and lube inside the neck. Worked great but slower than Joe Biden.

Is there a homemade spray type lube that works as good but cost less?

Lanolin and alcohol mixture.........

I started using the Lee "white stuff" way back in mid-90s when I got into hand loading and never seen a need to leave it. Put on very lightly it will create smooth die contact and literally wipes away with a cloth once you are done.

I use the dry gas in the red bottle and liquid lanolin.
Ten to one ratio.
I use an almost see threw plastic spray bottle.
Put a line four inches up with a sharpie.
Another line a half inch up.
Fill it to the first line with the dry gas.
The fill to the second line with the lanolin.

A little goes a long way.
Do not over spray your brass.
And give it ample time for the achohol to evaporate or you will get a stuck case.

If you don't have a stuck case kit, get one.
I actually keep two of everything in stock just in case.

Thanks for all the input. I had seen the alcohol/lanolin video a while back and forgotten about it. Seems simple enough. Been at this for 40 years, prolly past time for a new trick for this old dog.

Another vote for 12:1 Bootleg case lube (Iso Heet and liquid lanolin). I first started using Bootleg per the 6:1 video I watched. Used it successfully for several years. But found if I sprayed cases heavily, I could get lube dents. But in fairness, I do spray the entire case including shoulder and case neck.

I tried 12:1 and it sizes just as well and I've never seen a lube dent no matter how much you spray on. I also found using Heet you don't have to let it evaporate off before you start sizing. A very forgiving mix.

If you heat up your liquid lanolin (use care it is flammable) you will find it mixes in the alcohol with much less effort. I also spray my cases lying on a flat sheet and roll them around. There is a base layer on the sheet to start with, so the alcohol spreads what is on the case with the residue on the sheet and takes less spray.

Depending on which rifle, I use Hornady One Shot. Its about $9 a can, which goes a long way.

I used to use homemade, but the ability to spray from an aerosol can is just handier.

Ideal 77 yellow wire pulling lube and alcohol. This appears to be how Dillon makes the case lube they sell. The only thing i never figured out was how to keep it in suspension, i had to shake it up when i used it. i am about out of one stuck so i will need to make some soon. if you figure out the suspension problem let me know. The ratio used to be on the web somewhere i am thinking 75 -25.

I’ve tried just about every lube on the market as well as the lanolin mix, and what I use now is 1 ½ oz of Hornady LIQUID one shot (not the wasteful aerosol) mixed with 12 oz of red Iso-Heet. The liquid does not affect primers or powder, no post-lube cleaning required. Just a couple sprays in a ziplock bag, shake, let the alcohol evaporate for 15 minutes, and reload. Leaves a nice slick (NOT sticky) coating on the brass that stays for weeks stored in another ziplock. How I came about this is another story….but this mix really works great.

Andy Granatelli and a pad to roll the case on. This is used for general resizing. If it is difficult to extract the case use Imperial sizing wax.
