Need a patient smith really good with 6ppc experience

I would like a gunsmith take my 700 action and put a barrel on it in 6ppc and answer a lot of questions. I have every caliber I want except 6ppc and instead of spending so much on custom action would like to save money and time but am in no hurry. I will need dies as well and need someone that will make suggestions and offer advice after its together. I have watched for cheaper rifles for sale but would like to see where this leads me. Thanks just shoot pm if interested

I would try to get a used PPC gun you will have less in it and the stock will be right. When your done with the Remington you will still have to get a stock. Larry

Making a remington into a decent ppc will cost over $1000 when its all said and done- thats if you can find a 40x or xp action under $500. Ive built many and even have some. Theyre slow and take a lot of work then you just gave it all away if you sell it. You can find a nice used br gun ready to shoot- jewell trigger, barrel, stock, most times brass and dies for less than youll have in that remington unless you have a br stock, barrel, trigger and can do the work yourself. Check out benchrest.com classifieds, bob whites shooters corner or thud on here- hes got a lot for sale too

savage and fellas - i appreciate the advice and honest i have been watching for used ppcs - the ones that were in my price range were gone all scooped up and i know that is route i need to take but i have spare receiver and a choate stock and a 36 weaver just waiting for a ppc -i have a 6br nesika and it is just sweet but it took 8 months and a months salary to get - all i needed was a good barrel and a good smith to go the cheap route --i do check benchrest site often and even gb - i have seen several that even came with dies and brass but i always miss out on it or its a little out of my price range - after county taxes and uncle sam i will see whats left over and go from there !! i got the ppc bug and wont get rid of it until i have one -- again i appreciate the info

Good and cheap are NOT compatible . You ask the question that all starters ask , the answer is always the same and has been since the late 1980 . Precision shooting magazine asked 6 or 10 noted shooters the same question , all of there answers were , sell what you have and put it towards a good used rifle .
If interested in the article I can give better dates . Pm me if interested .

G if you come across i would like to read the article - i know good and cheap does not go together and i can not think of anything that tickles me more than an accurate one hole rifle - i just dont know why i dont own a 6ppc - the reason and only reason i considered cheap stuff is because i actually do have several factory rifles that will shoot with the 6br and some i have 1/4 of the cost in - a factory 204 xr and a ltr 223 and a 40x 22-250 shoot dang good up against the br - my simple little mind figured if a good smith trued my action and put a 400 dollar barrel on it and i put it in a stock i already have then maybe it would shoot if i did my part -- i will take everyones advice and i kind of figured this would be everyones answer - i am just going to be patient and wait until one of you fellas find that old ppc sitting in back of safe and say hey i remember a good ole boy looking for one !! i dont competition shoot but i know of no one around that loves an accurate rifle more than me - if it looks good then thats just a plus - i do not have anything for 6ppc so i know i will need dies and brass and powder and bullets - figure that in and well - just have to do it pieces at a time - i will keep my eyes open and you fellas keep me in mind as well and i appreciate the advice - what is the old saying buy once cry once

#1 Get on the phone to PTG and order a bolt to fit your Remington action with a PPC bolt face, You can bush the bolt face, install a new extractor, and usually fix the bolt timing issues, but it will cost as much or more. #2 You will need to epoxy a SS adapter into the acion. #3 Order a barrel. #4 Find a smith with a 6PPC reamer in the neck and throat configuration you are looking for. #5 take it home, bed it into your stock and enjoy.
I agree that buying a good used BR rifle is the better way to go, but to each his own and unless you shoot in competition you will never notice the difference.

I like your plan to use the Remington action. I think custom actions are worth the money if you want fit, finish, and smoothness but do not measurably affect accuracy (other than a positive mental attitude). I have the reamer and the patience but live in CA and have resisted the urge to get the FFL (google ARES Arms ATF raid, I live 5 minutes from them) so you'd have to bring it by for me to barrel and i see you're in North Carolina.

For the bolt face I would go with the Sako extractor. Very clean and the install of the extractor will kill 2 birds with one stone.

One thing you will have to overcome with the remington action is the lack of a bolt release on most competition triggers but I assume you've addressed this already.

Good luck,
Jerry

You may want to contact skeetlee on this board. He was looking for projects on here a short time ago.

I would definitely not use a Sako extractor. Use a M16 extractor for the extra safety. If you use your factory bolt you will need to bush the bolt face for the .062 firing pin and bush the front of the bolt for the smaller size PPC cartridge. I would send your newly machined bolt to Dans40X to tig your bolt handle on and time it. You may be told that you don't need the .062 firing pin, but after you blank a few primers you will figure it out. The PPC shoots very well, but needs a pretty high pressure load to shoot best.

Saving money by doing all that needs to be done to a factory Remington, to bring it to high end custom standards is an oxymoron. Trust me, but I'm sure others will agree...spend the money on a custom! It's not so much that a well done factory action can't compete with a good custom at times, as it is consistency and re-sale value. There are a few smiths that can do work that is equal to custom, but none of them, that I'm aware of, do as much for the re-sale value of the finished product as Borden, Bat and possibly Kelbly's.

If the money is at or even nearly the same..and it is..why not go with a custom that increases the value of the finished product? The difference is approximately 2:1!..or very close to it, depending on which market your build is geared around. The tactical market is still paying 2-3 times too much for a re-labeled Remington!(not calling any names) They are the exception, but their standard has not yet risen to that of the benchrest community.

Flame on! I'm good with it. These comments are not off the cuff, but substantiated ones, and backed up by many of the most respected names in the industry.

For example..There are major players in the tactical market that claim, for reliability's sake, that their clearances between the firing pin and its hole are necessary, all awhile creating cratered and even pierced primers with relatively mild loads that create reliability issues and even break triggers.

If you're wanting a PPC, I'm sure you both want and need better than that. The pressures that many BR shooters operate their PPC at will make those guys blush and certainly crater and pierce primers if the clearances are too large.

I'm just pointing out one example with fp clearance. There are many other reasons to go the custom action route.

Like butch said he ppc shoots best at high pressure. These kinds of pressures are not going to cut it long in a run of the mill Remington 700. A tig welded bolt handle is a must in my mind, as is the small .062 firing pin.
I would also suggest you sell your stuff and buy an action suited for your task. The kelbly Atlas would be a great action for you, and at 900$ the price is unbeatable. Tom haverkamp also sells a fantastic trued action for under 1000$
If you are ok with shooting lighter loads and knowing your capabilities will be limited, there truly isn't a reason why your rem 700 cant work with some modifications. If you choose to do so I would order a new bolt from dave kiff with the mods already done. might be cheaper in the end??
In order to use your factory bolt and assuming its a 308 or 223 bolt faced bolt, you will have to have the bolt face bushed for a ppc, the firing pin hole bushed for an .062 firing pin, a new extractor installed, and the bolt handle tigged in place, and timed. then the firing pin will have to be modified for the .062 firing pin hole. Lots of work and expense.
I think you already mentioned you had a 6BR already, but maybe the 6BR is the better choice in your situation???

I hope your project works out for you. where there is a will there is always a way. Enjoy yourself, that's the main thing. lee

Every time I stop in at Shooter's Corner, Bob White has a great selection of used Benchrest rifles, mostly 6PPC in all price ranges and for short range Benchrest I have found his advise and guidance a great help.

you all have pointed out lots of stuff i never thought about - did not realize problems with the higher pressures - i tend to stick with the most accurate lighter load but see that wont work the best with ppc - plan is sell some stuff and hold out until i have funds for custom action or watch for a sale - i have an old 700 in 22-250 heavy barrel that shoots really good and looks good for an older rifle - most of the time if a rifle makes it to my house and it shoots - well it has found a home but this might be the exception - i have some other scopes etc that i will work on moving out and see where i am at - fellas i appreciate all the info and suggestions and keep me in mind if you run across a ppc that fits what im looking for - maybe even a no turn neck ! - will post back with lots of questions on the ppc when i get everything i need thanks again

dang - that shooters corner - never heard of site but he has a list - long list of good stuff - i will start there

What are your plans for the rifle? Any registered competition or varmint and fun shoots?
Bob White has a ton of stuff there but not much in up to date stuff that are used and winning in today's competition.

Let us know what your plans are

Buy from Bob White , get use to the accuracy game and possible competition . Then trade or sell or upgrade on the purchase . He's got lots of Bench rigs with a lot of work already done and still has a lot of life in them .
