In need of a smith

I know the terms fast and gunsmith today don't really go together. However, due to the hurricane in Texas my brother's build is on hold as his smith is out of order or something of that nature. He has a few thousand dollars tied up in parts and is looking for someone who can build his project before the snow comes here in NY, actually sooner than that so he can get some shooting in before it gets too cold. He has already been waiting about 8 weeks with little to no progress. In short, he is looking for a quick turn around time from a good smith. I figure there has to be someone possibly on the east coast or close by who could do a chamber job, thread and crown a barrel and get it mounted on a BAT action and in a stock, all provided) sooner than 8 weeks. We have made some calls to the more known smiths, some on this site) but figured maybe the good folks here might know of someone looking to make a few bucks who is not backed up with work.
Names and numbers would be great.
thanks

Try Bob Green in York PA. He does a first class job and has always been quick on this turn around times.

What caliber is it and does he have the reamer? Is the barrel stainless or carbon steel, and if carbon would it be standard hot blue, or is he looking for custom polish and blue?

Bob Green is good if he can get to it. You might try Pete Peiper of Precision Barrel Work in Hempstead, Texas. Pete has some of the nicest most modern equip. and does outstanding work. I have known him for close to 20yrs.

Thanks guys, we will call around. He has a Mike Rock ss barrel on order but may opt for something else to get the project started. He found out yesterday the barrel is at least another month or so out. It's going to be 308 and no he has no reamer, but could potentially get one if it helped speed things up. It's going to be a fairly simple tactical build. No flutes or break, the manners stock has been made for his action and barrel contour already and the action is a single shot BAT SV 2 lug diamond fluted bolt. Everything but the barrel is ready to go. If he could find a good SS 30cal barrel with an 11 twist, heavy palma) it could be started this week. I called Clay Spencer and he said it would be a few months. I think this is going to be the norm. It seems smiths are in BIG demand.
thanks for the suggestions
Oh yea, he wants the finish on the gun to be camo. I cant' believe he is going to paint over the BAT action but I can't talk him out of it.

I just finished a big project and had a couple of days open and I thought I could help you out. I have a PTG match reamer in .308 with one chamber on it but I don't have a barrel blank in what you are looking for. I'm starting another project soon but if you want to check with me later my e-mail is jeff@mwerksllc.com. I have been slipping the guys in going to Lodi for the F/class shoot and have been getting them rebarreled in two or three days.

My brother's gun is complete and came in the other day. He ended up going with a smith in Texas. Anyway, it is the slickest tactical/target build I have ever seen. The barrel is a Mike Rock SS 1:11.25 twist heavy palma, 22" long with a recessed crown. The stock is custom from Manners, the action is a single shot BAT SV RBLP with diamond pattern. Its got a BAT rail with Bager Ordanance rings and a 6-24X Carl Zeiss Victory scope. The bipod is from a secret source my brother will not give up. The bolt handle has a tac. knob that we had to tweek ourselves to clear the scope. It came out real nice. Paint and finish was done by the smith. It's in 308 and makes one large hole at 100yds with Fed. 168 GMM. It's giving my 6BR a real run for the money. Total cost of his build was around $6,000. !! The action is GLASS and the gun is LIGHT to carry if needed. The pic here does not do it justice. The group is a 9 shot group at 100 yds with Black Hills 175gr HPBT.

Try Walt Frear in MD 301-585-4448. He received all my parts for my project on 9/26/2008 and I picked up my completed F-Class F/TR rifle, action work, barrel fitting, trigger work and stock bedding) on 10/18/2008. I have seen and shot some of his previous work, my favorite is a tactical 308 with a 1:9 twist using 240gr. HPBT Sierra MK bullets at 600 yards on steel, and he will also build my next project.
