Need a New Primer Tool

Well I think that I am in need of a new primer tool. A hand held one I believe will not work, fore I use Wolf and Tula SRM primers. The tool that I have now has just about seen it's day and will not seat them to the bottom of my Lapua. 223 brass. My regular small primer pocket uniformer from Sinclair, would not touch the bottom of the primer pocket, so I used the one for the BR brass.

So what do you think fellas, is there a tool out there that can seat these hard to seat primers in my BR uniformed pockets without giving me cramps in my hand trying to get them in?

Well I use the BR priming tool on my 223 brass, and use the RCBS APS priming tool no problems. I like the APS because it needs no shell holders ect. Just pick it up and go. Works on .204-.338. I have two of them one for small and one for large primers.

I was thinking about that one, a friend of mine uses one and seems to like it. I just wanted some feedback before buying anything.

By far the best I've ever used is the Sinclair hand priming tool. It will last you a life time however it's not cheap and it's not easy to switch from large to small and visa versa priming. Therefore I've purchased two, one set up for large rifle primers and one for small rifle primers.

The tool take Lee shell holders. You can purchase additional heads and install shell holders for different cartridges. This makes it very quick to switch from one cartridge type to another when a different shell holder is required.

This is not a high volume reloading tool but designed for precision shooters and seating one primer at a time. If this meets your needs, I highly recommend it.

When my old Lee Auto Prime got loose and wore out, I went with the Sinclair. It is easily depth adjustable and gives good 'feel'. If I was buying today, I would go with the 21st, but it wasn't available at the time.

Go with the new 21st Century tool...

It is by far the nicest benchrest style tool I have used. Super solid, great feel, and comfortable. Adjusting the depth is just a twist of the top, no more taking the tool apart and using shims, etc....Each twist is .0025" +/- adjustment. This tool will last a lifetime as well. No more losing small set screws while changing out shell holders.

Well I am going to have to get something, niether of my tools that I have now will seat the primers in these deeper primer pockets. Guess I will give the 21st cent a try.

froggy,
if you don't mind waiting till the matches, you can try mine out if you want. but that is getting kinda late.
cheers,
doc

Well I took the old RCBS tool apart, seen that there was some wear on the stem where it rides the cam to lift the primer cup for seating the primer into the pocket. I rotated it 180 degrees, checked the part that holds the shell holder, it was a lil loose. So I tightened that and now it is back doing the job it was intended to do. The problem I have always incountered with Wolf primers is the fact that they hard to seat, from being so tight on the primer pocket. Now instead worrying about being able to fully seat the primer, I have got to instead the worry of crusshing them due to the force that is needed, which could mask to feeling of hittin the bottom of the primer pocket.

On the 21st Century, the adjustment moves the head of the tool up and down on the tool body in increments of .0025. For a given primer/primer pocket combination, this allows you to set how close the thumb lever comes to the tool body. The closer to the body, the more leverage. I have mine set so that it is easy to work, and I can feel it hit the bottom of the pocket quite well, and from there I can compress the pellet a little by feel. If your need more leverage, you can have the lever stop closer to the body. If you have thin primers and deep pockets, you can compensate with the setting, without taking the tool apart. I have primed a lot of cases with my Sinclair, and for that matter with a Lee. This is a very well designed and made tool.

I use a Lee Ram primer set into the lowest cost Lee press thats made. Does a wonderful job of seating primers.

Hand seaters are wonderful....until you lose your strength ( grip) in the hand you normally use.....then its about 20-25 casings your your done for the day.

I think plenty has been said about the merits of the 21st Century priming tool. I'm sure anyone that has used it will agree it is unsurpassed by even the best out there. There is a new instructional video that demonstrates it pretty well.

I have a new Frankford Arsenal hand tool...it gets me a lot more seating leverage than my tired old Lee hand prime. May or may not work for your needs. I think I paid $80 including their set of shell holders. It works well, but if I was shooting benchrest, I would get one of the precision models mentioned previously.

Froggy ,
My hands have lost a lot of there strength, I have 2 21st century hand tools and love them a Sinclair and a K&M there also good tools however I prefer the 21st century. With that being said I’m buying a cps from primal rights. It’s a benchrest quality bench mount primer seater

I wish the Lee bench primer was of higher quality. I like the setup but can't convince myself to get one given the plastic parts and lack of seating adjustment.

I have the Frankfort Arsenal hand primer and like it. It was on sale when I bought it for $60 and it's a sturdy construction. The included shell holders have pretty sloppy tolerances on the case rims and I replaced the ones I use regularly with Lee shell holders that are much better fits. It's also very heavy. I rest my hand on the bench or in my lap while priming so I don't have to hold it up.

EDIT: This thread is 9 years old. I'm not sure Froggy is still looking, but the info is still good for anyone else!
