Need a little advice on minor fixes with a Rem 700?

Ok so I need something else to work on to pass the time while waiting on my 6br to be bulit. I have a Rem 700 sps 270wsm. I picked up this rifle from a guy at work. It was brand new in the box. We had a rough year last year being on short time. Got it for $300 didn't need it really but at the time I figured heck I could sell it for $400 and make a $100. Well It seems that I have grown to like the 270wsm for Whitetails. I Replaced the stock with a good used HS stock. Rifle shoots good enough for hunting out to 200yrds with RL-17 but, just not happy or self satisfied. Like I said I need a small project to work on while waiting on my 6br to be completed.

At this time I really can't work to much on working up a good load, due to the fact I need to have GRE -Tan to bushing the firing pin hole, and shave the firing pin to .062. It's cratering Primers rather it's a min, or mild load. So I'm afriad of getting too close to max pressures with it, or It worries me anyway? I think GRE-Tan has me covered on that?

The other thing is the factory trigger is feels like 5 or 6 #s. So it's very hard to tell extactly what a load is doing. I was wondering how the Factory triggers do as far as pulling the weight down to 2 to 2.5 lbs. 3 lbs maybe but that"s the max pull I like, as well I don't like to go any lower than 2 lbs in my hunting rifles. The trigger isn't really that bad as far as how it breaks. It does break pretty good. It's just so dang heavy. If I have this trigger pulled down to the weight I prefer what are the chances it will still break clean? I was thinking maybe I could get the factory trigger worked on instead of using an aftermarket trigger, and save a few bucks?
Thanks
Mark

Barry,
I'm asumming that Greg worked on a factory Rem trigger for you? How did that turn out? as far as the trigger. Does it still break clean?

Yes-Factory Rem -four years old-Greg does fine work and on small jobs-trigger/bolt bushing he has good turn around time. Sent rifle to him to fix egg shaped firing pin hole, stripped plug screws in reciever on new rifle.barry

Bushing the firing pin hole based on your handloads? Well, it's your money, but I'd shoot factory ammo first, and if primers aren't being cratered, then your loads on the problem, not the rifle.

As to the trigger, it takes 15 minutes to adjust a Rem 700 trigger down to under 3 pounds. It's simple, and can be easily and safely done by a careful person at home. Google for instructions.

Then go get some factory loads. :)

I have tried factory ammo in the rifle. Yes crater's are there! Too add the crater's are worse with factory ammo than my handloads. That tells me my handloads are below max pressures. So that lead me to researching the problem. It seems that I'm not the only person having this problem from factory Rem bolts, and other factory bolts as well! I should have mentioned that in my post but didn't. I'm not that green when it comes to reloading!

The cratering isn't my main concern here. I know what needs to be done to fix that. My main concern is getting the factory trigger to a prefered weight and still break clean. I don't want to have to drop 250+ into a jewell trigger on a deer rifle if I don't have to!

For 75$ i have a friend that rebuilds rem factory triggers in to a work of art. He replaces most of the internals or all of them and will set your trigger at any weight you want.. He also does a comp trigger for 100 bucks. I have only ever seen one of his triggers break and that was a extreme situation. If you want PM me and i can give you his contact info. Billy is a stand up guy that edms all the parts himself.
