Need a bigger gun safe

Wondering if there are any really good deals out there on safes that hold 30 or so long guns? I'm also wondering if anyone out there has used the "Rifle Rods" system that is supposed to increase gun capacity by 50 percent or so? I've seen 'em advertised on TV and at gun shows but have never talked to anyone who has used them. Also, most safes now are using the electronic locks, which I dont like and was wondering what are the safety provisions if the battery/lock fails?

I too do not like the electronic lock so I had the maker put on the old dial type. Same cost.
As for 30 gun if your rifles are scoped cut that figure in half. The rifle rods I've only seen the adds can't help there.

I tried the rifle rods with mixed results. If you use them on a short rifle, so you have a longer reach to the top velcro, the rods will bend and then come loose. I guess it's too much pressure for the adhesive to hold. The plastic rods bend easily at least in my experience they did.

With a shorter reach they seem to work well. The idea is sound, and when I first installed the setup it did save space. Just won't hold up. I still use a rod or two on shorter guns and a shelf that's set up higher in the safe.

Battery failure is not an issue as they will hold memory for a a few years after the battery goes. This is what i was told anyway.

As for the lock falling and at some point they will it will take a good safe cracker to drill it and get in.

Mine failed and was about to call a lock smith since I was sure it was out of warranty. I thought what the heck and emailed the manufacture. got a call the next day to conform what I all ready know about the warranty. But the manufacture was so much help with who to contact about getting in and changing the lock to a real dial lock.
Calling the safe cracker I was referred to witch was the best and so informative. he let me watch most of what he was doing and like to talk so he answered most my questions. he told me if I had called a lock smith in the are they would have ended up calling him with the problem I had and he would charge them the same as he was going to charge me they would naturally mark it up and get really expensive. with the new lock it cost me about $250 witch I thought was less than it should have been for the amount time and tooling he spent I gave him an extra $50 just because of the time and tooling. He told me he had other customers get quoted 6oo+ by some of the lock smiths. I never realized there are actual certified safe crackers and the one that did my safe he told me was one of only two in the state.

Sorry for getting a little off topic but if you have a lock fail just a suggestion to look into finding a certified safe cracker in your area with references. the guy that I got was for sure very self assured I guess would a way of putting it but I do honestly believe some of the stories he told me about getting into safes and the problems that arise.

I sure wish I had room for a second safe myself I could use one.

You will never get a gun safe that is large enough. When we buil our new house I took 10 ft off the back of the garage and made a 10 X 20 vault. It`s over loaded and I wish I would have made it 15 X 20. ::)

Good Morning,

Tractor Supply is currently running a sale on a Canon 48 Gun safe. Normally $999, on sale for $799. I'm going to check it out today.

I also was hesitant about the electronic lock...... my local gun shop sells several safes a year, and has never had any negative feedback with electronic locks. One of the problems with the dial lock, according to locksmiths, is that a lot of people mis-place, or forget the combination. With the e-lock, you can get your safe's default code from the manufacturer with the proper documentation.
Accurate Shooter has a good primer on safes in the archives.
I used to feel secure that a safe was adequate protection......until someone posted on here how easy it is to get in one. I won't repeat the method of entry as that poster did, but it was an eyeopener. Like the old adage....a safe will only keep the honest people out. Without a doubt, a properly built vault is the best solution.

Boot someone out of a bed room and install a steel door and bar up the windows. You will never have to worry about getting another larger safe to store your guns ;D

If you have a Dicks where you live, go check out some of the safes they have. I bought 1 several years ago that had a divider in the center. ! side you could store your longer guns. The other side has 2 shelves to store stuff on but it cut down on the height of a rifle you could put on that side. I use that side for 22s and AR,s. I went a couple years ago to buy a smaller safe than that because i was running out of room. I paid for the safe and pulled my truck out front and they helped me load it up. Got it home and took the stuff off it to move it inside. UH OH, it was not the right safe. It was bigger and the exact same 1 i had bought before. Yea baby......needless to say i had a big smile on my face. Also, look for the safes that have the door that you can put pistols, revolvers and stuff on. I saw 1 awhile back and think it was a Browning. It had a real nice thing mounted to the door ( not sure what you would call it ) but it was real nice to store them in and it keeps stuff very orginized. If i had seen 1 of them like that before i had bought the second safe it would have been 1 of those.

Happy safe hunting,
Dan
