Need 6mm advice

Need 6mm advice and new to board. Wanting to build a quality new rifle in one of the 6mm calibers with the following criteria:
... magazine fed reliably and configured as walking predator
... target to 500 yards
... varmint 350 yards
... eastern whitetail deer to 250 yards
... light recoil
... good barrel life
... good brass life
... easy on powder
While ease of forming brass is preferred, I am an experienced reloader and have worked wildcats before. Thx

Look at the 6X47 L. The brass is from the 6.5X47 L, I am going to build one. Look at the Berger loading manual. I like the 30* shoulder and great brass by Lapua. The SLR is a larger case and has a longer neck than the 243.

6MM REM OR A 243 WIN NOTHING SPECIAL WILL DO ANY THING U WANTED DONT HAVE TO NOTHING BUT SIZE AND LOAD NO FORMING BRASS ETC.IMPROVED VERISON WORK WELL ALSO IN THESE TWO CARTRIDGES

Look at the brass you can buy for what ever cartridge you pick. All brass is not the same. The bigger cases will burn the barrel quicker. A 6mm Dasher will shoot very well but feeding will be a problem.

Thanks, the 6x47L is certainly a contender. I just ordered the Berger Manual - it's the only one I don't have.

Im a huge 6mm rem fan but have you tried to get any brass lately? I have 3 myself- a factory brass chamber, a match chamber and an AI chamber. I use all 3 a lot

The 6 SLR will do everything you want and will get you slightly better barrel life than a 243. Also look into a 6 creedmoor. My smith has built 4 6 dasher repeaters that he reports work perfectly.

The cartridge you describe is the 6BR 1-8 twist.

Except one criteria point is to magazine feed. BR is out

The 6BR has been made to feed from a magazine. There has been several article's where the BR has been made to feed.

http://www.accurateshooter.com/guns-of-week/gunweek032/

I have gone with the 6XC. feeds from a short action with out any modifications. things I don't like about the 243 win. it was never designed to shoot the high BC(long bullets) we have available today. to feed a 243 from a short action magazine that's 2.800 long you have to seat the bullet well below the neck shoulder junction. I don't like that for reasons of bullet in the powder space, bullet pushed through the donut area(if you have a case that has one). The 6XC is a modern design that came about by running a 243 reamer short. by trying to improve on the 243's faults. came the 6XC. shorter case less powder capacity,But more Velocity due to better case design. with the ability to shoot the high BC 105's or 115's and stay above the neck shoulder but still feed from a 2.800 mag. I feel if you are going to build a 6mm and want the best you can get in velocity with out being a barrel burner.can feed from a short action with no modification. able to shoot the high BC bullets with high sectional density. the accuracy from the case design. you want the 6XC. You just buy a 100 or 200 Norma cases and you will be happy as can be. but if you want to go cheep you can fire form 22-250 cases.

any of the 6mm cartridges will work for what you want. But IMO if there is one that is better it's the 6XC
You can research every cartridge form the time it was made(wild cat) to date. read all the article's on them and then you decide if you feel one has more benefits than the other. sometimes it's nothing more than a personal choice. Other times
you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. some time it's not easier were looking for.lol

Ive got em to feed as well. Some days they work some they dont. Im sure if you go ask my friend mike bryant he wouldnt do another one if he was in business. Some have fed many many more have failed in some way over time and when they do you got a mad customer. Been there done that

Well, how about a 6mm-06?

As a hunting rifle long action verses short action. I have a short action with a 26" barrel that is no longer than my Long action with a 24" barrel. So I go with a short action and a longer barrel. My reason's for a short action. Also I can get the performance for what I want form a short action cartridge.Nothing wrong with the 6mm/06 other than the few I have seen the barrel's did not last long and they do eat more powder.

Have you tried the wyatt box magazine and follower for the BR, some guy's said they work great in a rem 700. I have never tried one.

Ive tried the AI mags in the defiance bottom metal. Not a big fan of wyatts. I tried the long 308 and the regular. Too short to control the round and not good reliable ejection is the main problem. When they fall into the action feeding is a secondary problem. I did work on a remington dasher a few hours again last week and for the eleventeenth time i said never again!
