Need 6BR Bullet Choice and Recipe help

I just purchased by first 6br it has a 26" Douglas Match Barrel 1:10 twist on a 700 action and looking for help on loading. 100 -300 yards

With all I have read it looks Lapau brass, 205 or 450 primers, berger bullets 68 grain or 80 grain which do you recommend? Varget or 135 powder?

Can anyone help? Your recipes would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Joe

What is your intended use for the gun? Varmint shooting, or paper punching or both? As for the bullet, the 75 A-Max or Sierra varmint bullets are great. Now as for powder, try Varget first. But ultimately , let your gun decide. Im not that big on Varmint hunting as I dont do it a whole lot so hopefully other guys will chime in.
Now if your shooting 300 or further for paper,I would go with an 80grn or something around it. BTHP would be my choice.

H4198 on light bullets, H322on 68 gr has woekd well in my thre 6brs, I like to shoot paper and Prairie dogs, Ramshot Xterminator works well for quantity loading and shoots 62-65 bergers extremely well for varmints. I love this caliber, I have 5 of them. I have a 10 twist kreiger that is a lazer with 70 gr Sierra Blitzking and H322.

Joe: Not using my 6BR's for "live" targets so am speaking about shooting paper. Two of my favorite, most consistant ( over a 7 year period & with 5 different barrels/chamberings) are: 30 grs. of VV N133 with the Berger 68 gr. #24411. A little on the mild side, but extremely accurate. The second combination is 32.5 grs. of VV N135 with the same 68 gr. Berger. Seems to be a little better at 300 yds., and/or if there is any wind that could be a problem. This load was brought to my attention on this site & is proving to be excellent.

VV powders remain my favorite for the 14 twists. Very consistant from one jug to another and also very clean burning.

The 68 gr. Bergers have a proven track record, dating back to 1998 when I had my first 6ppc built. They are also reasonably priced at approx. $23/100, at Powder Valley, for example.

They are always seated to touch & I prefer Federal 205's. Never could prove any advantage with the 205M's, in many side-by-side comparisons. Just what works for me. ;) p.s.: The 80 gr. Berger # 24321 is also an excellent choice if you want a heavier weight. For those I'm using 31.5 grs. of Varget. Have tried VV N140, but still working with it. Results inconclusive so far.

Thanks for the responses I have recieved so far. My intent is to punch paper and mostly 100 and 200 yards, limited to local area ranges. I was leaning towards the 68 grain bergers but had concerns about wind, I am told the 80 will be more stable. How much more acurate is the 68 vs. the 80?

Thanks once again for all of your help.

Joe

I have been shooting the 6 BR since the late 80's. The 6 BR was brought to my attention by Gene Harwood that set a world record with it using His own 60g HP and H335 at 3700 fps.

I have two 6 BR's currrently and at 300 yards, the most accurate load with a little wind is with a max load of AA2230 and a 55g Nosler...hard to believe till you see the speed at 3900 fps.

Joe: "I am told the 80 will be more stable". Sounds like "range talk", someones opinion, and of course, we all have those. Best solution? Load up 20 of the 68's and 20 of the 80's, take 'em out & try them yourself. There are a lot of other factors at play here, other than bullets & powder.

Using wind flags? Paying attention to changing light conditions? A good solid front rest? Nice wide, flat forend on a dedicated bench rifle? Rifle set-up & riding the bags properly during firing? I could go on and on. The list would be very long.

At least if you test them side-by-side yourself, all conditions are more likely to be the same, so you're comparing apples to apples.
