NEED 1000 YARD ADVICE !

I remember in one of my barrels getting 2900 with 105 at 29g Reloder 15 . Max is 29.9. But I’ve read where guys were using 30.5 and up but I’m not going to ruin my brass .
The BRX and Dasher have enough capacity to use RL16 which gives a little more speed with less pressure but it's too bulky for the straight 6BR. My guess is you'll end up in the low 2800's. If it's the only bullet you have, it's a good one! Around .020" off is where I'm at.

Yes it’s the only heavy bullet I have . I’ll start at -.02 and go in from there .

Thank You

The difference between 500 and 1000 is just drop and wind. It's not a magical distance. If your rifle will keep bullets supersonic all the way to 1000yrds then you can hit 1000yrds on a target sized appropriately to your rifle's accuracy potential. Step 1, don't overthink it. A bipod or front bag and rear bag, a dope table and a scope that can dial enough up. I teach children to do this on their own (without anyone telling them what to do or dialing their scope for them) every year. They don't seem to have trouble. No reason a grown adult should have trouble except by overthinking things so much that they confuse themself.
Excellent advice . Thank you

I'd suggest you use the 30" barrel, find out what your muzzle velocity is and use a ballistics program like JBM that has a bullet library and will plot the trajectory for you. Be sure to enter the approximate temperature/humidity and elevation for the range facility you will be shooting on. It has been some time since I loaded for the 6BR Norma but about 29 +/- grains of R15 should be about right for that bullet. The usual caution applies: start below and work up watching for excess pressure.
Finally, have someone who knows how to spot a bullet trace look through a spotting scope behind and above you. An experienced spotter can get you on paper if there is wind/mirage that is diverting the bullet.
Shooting at 1000 yards can be thrilling and humbling. Attention to NATURAL POINT OF AIM is essential, follow through and consistency as well.

Just talked to Berger . 26.5 - 29.2 with Reloder 15

I just ran some probable numbers on my new 6br with 24" barrel and 107s i expect 2790-2800fps. At 1K its still about 1350fps. Just barely making it!

So I’m finally going to get to shoot at 1000 . I’ve only shot 500 before so I’m open to advice . 6BR , 28” and 30” barrels , 109 Hybrids on way , Reloder 15 and CCI 450 .

All advice wanted !

Thx

Mark
Mark,
1k is no big thing, just get a good 100-yard zero in no wind conditions, with your load. Crono the load if possible. Use JBM to calculate your come-up (https://www.jbmballistics.com). At 2800 fps should be around 28 minutes above 100 yds when shooting at sea level & 75f . I used a 6BR back in 1999 to set a 1k NBRSA world record in Raton, NM...2.653" at the time. Just shoot & be happy!

Sounds like a plan ! Thank you

With a straight Br at 1000yds you are at a disadvantage to the BRA and other variety of modified cases. You just don’t have quite enough boiler room. If you are able to get a 103 class bullet out at say 2975 you are in the game. The Br’s run out of gas at 1000 to be competitive. Very good choice at 600 though. Have a very good spotter with good glass to spot your shots. But above all, have fun.

I won’t be competing , just trying to hit steel and maybe see what kind of groups I can get . Thx for the tips !

If their is no competition involved, load them up be safe and just have fun. It will help to have a good set of eyes spotting your shots. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to do it by yourself, especially at long range. I will become quite addictive, but just starting out you will need some additional eyes.

I have a long shot target cam that works pretty well , as long as I don’t accidentally shoot it ! Lol

I would like to ask what power of scopes is most popular at 1000 yards, while we’re on the subject.
For F/class I think something 30x is about minimum. But you'll find the 10-50x60 (Sightron), 15-60 (Vortex GE), 15-55 (NF comp) on most guns on the line. I use the sightron 8-32x56 on my 260AI and have a sightron 36x on my 6br.

Shooting steel, 10x will work, but 6-24 is very common, too. My hunting gun i have a 10x and have made hits at 800m on 1moa plates just fine with it.

Just got back from 1000 two weeks ago. I didn't need any special loads or magic barrels. Shot what I normally load for 250. Dialed in at 500. Everything after that was locating my splash (no spotter) and adjusting accordingly. Was dropping steel at 1000 at more than 80% hit rate. Go out and enjoy.

I have 2 Sightron 10-50s and 1 GE 15-60 .
Looks like I’m all set .

The 103 Vapor trail and 105 VLD shoot great at 1000. Some have some luck with 105 Hybrid, but that bullet seems to be a little harder to tune and doesn't work in all rifles. I believe the twist is why they don't. Good luck and have fun. As mentioned above, having a spotter behind the shooter to spot vapor trail is good to help you get on. Matt
Just shot at 1'000yd last weekend with my 6BR loaded with 103's {many thanks Rushty for your help/advice}, took out the F Open class on the day though windy +++ and nearly ran out of Left windage!
Only dropped 2.2 points to F Standard {30cal} of being high point overall..
The mighty 6 will shoot well against the others, .284, 6.5x.284, 6.5 Creedmoore, Dasher, etc.
Also like and have had good results with Sierra 107's.
BTW: Our range has electronic targets and that is makes it a joy to shoot at all distances as you can see where you hit directly on the screen of a small laptop next to you... Screen marked in 1minute squares making easy scope adjustments.
Just have to shoot the "Pull/Manual" target first to be sure that you are somewhere in the centre of the bull first for if you were to hit one of the 4 sensors in the electronic target frame that is big $$$ to repair. BTW: I am using a 28", 1:8 Benchmark barrel in an Eliseo R5. {Many thanks Gary, took out F Open this year with your great build}
