Neck turning question

An old timer needs some help as to how to convert .220 Russian Lapua Brass into 6ppc. I purchased a Remington 700 in 6ppc and it is time to replace the original brass that was included in the purchase. After many reloads, the cases have become hardened. Choosing not to try and anneal them, I purchased new .220 Lapua Brass. My benchrifle has a .262 chamber. The new brass has a .249 o.d. neck and a .218 I.d. That results in .031 of brass walls. I guess that somehow I’ve got to expand the o.d. large enough to hold the .243 bullet and then turn the brass to give about .085 thick walls. I’ve got a Forester case trimmer and recently purchased their case turning tools. Please help me as to how to do this. Many thanks.

ckaberna, yes I understand that the walls are .0155 thick, but how do I actually use the Forester turning tool to go from .0155 to .o85? Need some sort of special mandrel to go down inside the .218 neck to hold it concentric while turning the o.d.? What if I fire form it to the rifles chamber with out a bullet. I don't have an old barrel to fire form it in so would have to use my competition barrel.

ckaberna, yes i understand the each wall is .0155, but how do I hold the new case and turn the walls to .o85? The I.D. of the virgin brass is .218, have to have a special mandrel to fit snuggly in the .218 I.D.? What about fire forming it in my rifle, that way the I.D. would blow out, then turn? Still need to have some sort of mandrel to fit inside the I.D. while turning. Really not wanting to fire form in my competition barrel.

Thanks guys for your input. I’ve got 100 pieces of virgin .220 Russian Lapua Brass. I’ve already purchased a Forester neck turning tool that is suppose to fit my Forester trim to length tool. So, I need to somehow expand the necks, and how should I go about doing that, besides fire forming?
Going with DJ maybe the least painful way.

I guarantee that will be the least painful way.

You need an expander mandrel matched to your turning tool. Id send that new box to dj’s brass. Itll be turned to the correct thickness, no brass ruined, and actually be a 6ppc when you get it back so no fireforming.

Everyone is saying send your brass to Dj's and get him to prep your brass. But, if you have the tools, and you will have to buy more, its all in the learning process to do it yourself. I think you will learn a bit more if you do things yourself. You will need a forster expander mandrel and mandrel holder to expand your 220 up to 6mm. You will also need a ball mic to check your neck thickness as you turn. There a plenty of step by step guides to neck turning this site and others.

I want to thank all of you that responded. When a person becomes 82 yrs old, solution to problems aren’t as easy as when young and vibriant. Even navigating this web site is a challenge. All that being said, being retired and having the blessing of time, I want to convert these casing myself. A couple of you have sent me a personal email saying to contact them and they will walk me through the process, and that is what I’m going to do. This firearms community is very sharing. My only regret is that I wish I had gotten involved years ago in hand loading and accurate rifle shooting.
We are now getting ready to “go north” to Minnesota for the summer and the annual quest for the elusive walleye, but rest assured that in the cabin by the lake, nights will be spent converting the .220 brass in to 6ppc
Again thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

Stosh123: First of all, welcome to the world of accurate rifles. :)

Honestly, your best bet is to go with a complete quality neck turning setup from one manufacturer. There are several companies out there....K&M, PMA, Sinclair, etc.

As well, it's helpful to have a competent person sit down with you and walk you through the steps, setup, etc. until you get comfortable with the process. Nothing like hands on experience.

If you'd like to have your current cases stress relieved so they can be returned to service, I'd be happy to do them for you at no charge.

Good shootin' :) -Al

Once again guys, thank you for your input. All very interesting comments, and I will take advantage of your generous offers. Again having some issues as to responding to the input, specifically I had a response from Boyd Allen but somehow I’ve lost his message. He has offered to have me call him and said he’d talk me thru the entire process. It just occurred to me Boyd’s response may have been thru my personal email. Oooops, see what I mean by having a brain -art. DJ, I will accept your offer but I do want to pay you for doing the 50 pcs. This option of doing 50 pcs myself and you doing 50 pcs. which is best of two worlds. Bring walleyes back from Ely Minnesota, driving the 1500 miles is difficult, but then again I could ship them from Ely. Of course now I’m under the gun, so to speak, to produce the walleyes but that shouldn’t be a problem. Later, guys.

We are all blessed to have such a website to enable us to collaborate to help those that desire to take the next step. Just drop a note in the USPS flat rate and I'll turn them around in a day so you can go shoot. No charge just glad to help.

Thanks for having the courage to reach out and ask for help. Most all on here will be glad to assist a fellow shooter with limitations as yourself. We are all never to old to learn.
