Neck Turning Question

When neck turning all you want to turn is the neck so you just go down the the shoulder.
When turning necks on my 30BR i skim some off the shoulder with the angled edge of the cutter as it tends to thicken there when sizing up.
In standard 6BR I don`t think there is any need.

Ken, of K&M tools, recommends going up into the shoulder about 1/32", roughly .030", and he bevels the cutter tip of his neck-turning tools to allow that.

His theory is that cutting up into the shoulder thins the brass at the neck-shoulder junction, negating the formation of "dreaded doughnuts." I've done it both ways. I think a light turn into the shoulder does help and makes the very last section of the neck a bit more consistent.

You should be sure to trim all your cases to the exact same length before turning, however, and be sure to use a cutter stop so each case is finished the same.

If you go too far, the neck weakens to the point that you can tear the neck off with the mandrel and slight left/right movement,or worse yet while shooting/fireforming), and a little further down the neck into the shoulder and the neck turns off while cutting!

I've did this, not on purpose) making 22MR cases,.300" long 6BR's from 308 cases). Was a sad thing, all that work case forming to loose a case setting up the neck turner :,
