Neck Tension???????????

Hi guy's new to the forum :) but not new to the shooting sports or reloading ;D but I'm not and expert yet on reloading, I have been reloading for about 20yrs and have recently taken it to a whole new level, I'm starting to reload for serious long range shooting with in the limits of the 308win cartridge, and have lots of questions! I have been using Redding body dies and a Lee collet neck sizing die and also turning my case necks just enough to true them up using Lapua brass and 175gn SMK's, just a little insight on what I'm doing. I'm getting the 2k under on tension from a loaded round with my set up my neck thickness is k15 after turning, I get .336.6 neck sized and .338.5 on a loaded round and get a 1k snap back from a pulled bullet from the case, my brass shows an OD .344 on a fired case, I noticed when I checked the fit on a fired case with a new bullet the bearing surface at the heal at the boat tail is the only contact in the case mouth and it very slight, is this normal? I'm looking for help on this, I have done allot of research and have yet to find the answers I'm looking for :( all help is appreciated thanks Gene ;D

Sounds like you have donuts from not turning far enough into the case shoulder. Look inside the case mouth and see if you can see a ring at the shoudler neck junction.

well I did turn the necks to the shoulder line, can you explain to me what to look at inside the case mouth? what does this donut look like? :o

I checked a few more cases and the bullet seems to slide freely in and out of the case mouths ;D other then this does it sound like I have done my prep work correctly? :)

Also sounds to me like your forming a donut. This is due to brass flow from the shoulder of your case down into the neck. The only way I know of to get rid of it is to inside neck turn your cases. I have this problem in a 224 TTH and a 6-284. I haven`t fire my 6-300 WSM much yet, but I`m sure it will be real bad about brass flow.

Every time you fire a cartridge a little bit of brass flows, on the inside, from the body forward to the neck! After multiple firings this brass accumulates at the neck shoulder junction inside the brass! Your sizing techniques have absolutely nothing to do with this phenomenon. Inside neck turners/reamers are available! Now back to brass sizing. I don't know about you but, myself I have had zero luck with Lee collet neck sizers! Tried them on several cartridges and I find them to be as worthless as tits on a boar hog!!! Just my experience fwiw.

ok thanks for the info :) sorry to hear about your luck with the Lee sizer, I've had very good luck with mine I get less then 1K of run out with this neck sizer :o

Your welcome Gene! Runout wasn't the problem, which I don't check anyways but, they just weren't sizing the necks down enough for proper neck tension. They worked ok for a 22-250 I had but, they didn't work for snot on my 243 Win. and a 30-06 that I had. Went to Redding bushing neck dies and shazam, neck tension is exactly where I want it :)! I like to run about .002" neck tension if you were wondering?

Mike

well if my figures are right that's what I should have is 2k of neck tension as well :) thanks for your help and feed back ;D

First off, welcome aboard Gene. I can echo Mike's thought and solution. It's the only way (I know of) to solve your issue in attaining the neck tension you desire.

Alex

I wouldn't think you would get a donut with Lee Collet neck sizing die. The die pushes the brass around a mandrel and the donut should stay to the outside just like when you run a mandrel through the neck. Matt
