Neck sizer die conversion

I have a 6.5 Grendel for a bolt gun. What do I have to do to use a 6 PPC neck bushing die to resize just the neck?

If the 6.5 Grendel`s parent case is the 6PPC just get the proper bushings. You should have no trouble going up or down 2 calibers from the original cal of the die.

jfseaman, thanks but I already have that die, I need a neck sizer only die. Because the 6.5 Grendel was originally designed for use in an AR there were no neck sizing dies made for it. My rifle is built on a Savage bolt action.

If you already have that die it can be backed off to not bump or bump a little. Almost all BR guys full length size with a bump of .001 to .002. Test have shown it to more accurate. Matt

Matt, I wonder if a test has been performed to determine the difference between a case that is full length sized and a case that that has been shorten between the shoulder of the case and case head .001". 'I wonder' what factor applies?'

yes, it varies by die brand and sometimes from die to die of the same brand.
The shortened case is always .001 shorter. There is no factor. You measure it and you record the data.

Ive shot a lot of 65 grendel... its worth just full length sizing everytime with the redding die. I get 15 - 25 reloads of most of my lapua brass and annealing. Some cases go quicker, but as a majority they get a long life that really pays for the cost of the brass.

Last night I was experimenting with dies for my 6-6.8 Rem SPC brass and discovered I can use my 6 BR bushing neck sizing die to neck size [only] my 6.5 Grendel brass. I just have to make a slight adjustment to the locking ring on the die or find some washers or shim stock so that I don't have to distrub the setting for my 6 BR brass.

You can also set up a die by using a feeler gauge on top of the shell holder to measure the gap to the bottom of the die.
Just write down the feeler gauge required for each caliber.

If you want a neck die, you need a LEE custom collet die.

Send them two fired cases and bullets you use and you will get back a custom collet die and a seating die made for your bullets. Good price also!

I never thought of using a feeler gauge but I'll give a try. A Lee Precision custom collet would just the ticket. Thanks guys...

I use Redding Type S FL bushing sizers.

No problem using different caliber-range bushings to neck size or FL size, IF the case bodies and neck angles are the SAME.
6.5 Grendel may have a bit different body diameter than a PPC, I dunno; never owned either.

If you knew you were going to use one die for both ctgs, you'd buy the die with the larger body diameter or neck angle.
