Necking down a 6.5x47 to 6x47 lapua round

I have a RCBS gold medal bushing FL sizer die for my 6.5x47.

Is it possible just to change the neck bushing and resize my new brass to 6x47 since I now own a 6x47?

Long answer...Maybe

Short answer....Maybe.

I had a tough time using a bushing die. They tend to scrape and mar the brass quite a bit. I have had great luck with a non bushing neck or FL die.

My advice is to try one. If it does not work well, beg, borrow, or steel some sort of standard 6mm non bushing die. I am going to try and run them part way up into a 6mm br die. If the die you are using is shorter than the case you are working with, make sure that the sholder angles match, or are sharper on the die than the sholder on the case.

Good luck.

alinwa has a long thread on the Benchrest Central 600/1000 yard forum on necking down.

I followed his advice--to some degree--and created a false shoulder when I necked-down with a Forster FL die.

I don't know what reamer you cut your chamber with, but my chamber likes the Forster.

I use it with an expander ball.

Some, I know, neck size, but I believe most Benchrest shooters use a FL die.

Good luck,

NOTE: Talked to a RCBS tech today, he really didn't know much about a 6x47!!!!!!! I was shocked, I had to tell him his competetors were allready making dies for this round!!!!!!!

I wrote the same question a year ago. The best advice I got was to buy a Forester FL die and simply resize the new brass in one step. It works great! The accuracy has been so good that I haven't used anything else. I also bought the Redding S Type Bushing die, but I have never used it.

It's going to take some work, but what you want to do is neck down the 6.5 cases just far enough that you can force them into the chamber by camming the bolt down.

First, grease the bolt lugs.

Then, set the FL die so it doesn't neck down the the case enough to fit in the chamber.

Using trial and error, and remembering to lube your case every time--very important--using small increments slowly increase the depth to which the case enters the FL die.

Then test to see if you can chamber it.

When you reach the point at which the case will chamber, but with effort, lock your die and size the rest of the cases.

This forces the case head against the bolt face, resulting in really nicely fire formed cases.

You'll want to diminish your standard load by 10%.

Obviously, when fire forming, you'll have to force each round into the chamber.

I'm not certain of the causality, but I will say that my rifle, using this technique, set a new NBRSA 600 Yard Three Target Score record in March.
