Neck/chamber clearance

Have not received my barrel yet so I don't know exactly were it will come in at but it was ordered as a .253 & my brass comes in at .2505 so do you think I should send my Forster to be honed or leave it be??

Thanks

I was always told that as long as a bullet could pass through the neck of a fired case just touching that is about perfect. In my F class rifles I have around .004". In a hunting rifle or a rifle you intend to put a lot of rounds through, such as a varmint rifle, I would think .002" is a bit tight.

I don't know what honing your Forster (sizing die?) would do.
The .2505" is loaded neck, right?
That says your brass is 0.013"+

Any reason you went with a tight neck? planning on Lapua 0.012 neck thickness?
I think with a 0.253 neck you will be close. It you get stickage, neck turn a little.

What is the neck diameter after sizing with the expander plug removed? Loaded round diameter after being sized way down then bumped back up by the expander plug tells us nothing. You don't say if the .2505 is loaded size or out of the box size or size after running thru a die. Need mo' better info.

I hope I don't need to neck turn. I was going to go .254 but Northland talked me into .253. Can't wait for my tube to see if it will work.

.254 chamber neck works fine with Lapua brass in my .223 AI with a loaded neck measuring .2505

i have a .253" neck on a wylde reamer and it works a treat with Laps which will most likely be the thickest necks you can get, Laps usually come in around .250 with a pill in or maybe .0005 smaller. shoots really well with no issues on unturned necks and never had issues with any pressure signs.

All of my .223 Rem F-TR rifle chambers were cut with some freebore-length variant of the PTG 223 REM ISSF reamer, which was designed for optimized seating with the Berger 90 VLD. These reamers all are spec'd out at between 0.2524" and 0.2527" neck diameter (depending on the tolerances) and fit either Lapua or Starline brass with no issues and no neck-turning required. I generally run Lapua brass, and sizing with a 0.248" bushing gives me very close to 0.2500" loaded neck diameter and approximately .002" neck tension (interference fit). So a 0.253" neck chamber means somewhere very close to 1.5 thousandths neck clearance on either side with Lapua brass, which seems just about perfect in my hands.

When the barrel comes in check some various brands of Factory AMMO or loaded diameter (dummy rounds)of various brands of range pickup.

Nothing wrong with .0025 clearance. That's just fine. All my .223-cased chambers have a .250" neck, loaded brass is .247. Another 1/2 thou. larger would be just as good or better.

A .253" reamer does not leave a chamber with an exact .253" neck area. Figure at least an extra .001", sometimes .002" for lathe runout errors and chamber finishing.

My 223AI reamer has a .252 neck, I use Lapua Blue Box unturned with no problems. I also have used Hornady Match brass too.
