Here’s a question that hasn’t been addressed .

Q) How much Lot to Lot variances in speed using VV powders in particular N140 & N150 are guys seeing ?

I changed all my powders over to VV many years ago because of this, there is so little change/variances from lot to lot especially in the 1 series. I had one lot of N550 that was a little warmer then the previous lots but nothing crazy and I had one lot of N165 that was a noticeably slower then the other lots I have used but this is over many years of shooting allot of VV N1 and N5 series, the most used VV powders in in my house is N160 and N540 and I just open another bot and go to be honest.

N140 and N150 both work in the Dasher but if I had to choose one Id pick N140

Let’s circle back to this question.
Jim,
I use more N-135 than either 140 or 150 in my dashers. Both 140 and 150 work, 140 being very close to Varget and 150 (in a dasher) being it's own man on it's own time. Meaning N-140 loads will be close to Varget and 150 will be like RL-15 in some cases, particularly below 3000 velocity range, and like the high node of RL-16 at the upper end............ but lacking in the middle. [@ShootDots has written quite a bit about how 150 can be weird in a dasher but can be the holy grail in a BR.] This is my experience and the testing continues. However if velocity is what blows your skirt up, N-150 just may quickly become your friend.

To answer your question about lot to lot consistency, if there is any difference, it gets lost in the "tuning for current atmospheric conditions" noise. From my experience, VV powders are more consistent lot to lot than any other powders I have used.

I hope this help

Thank you, now as far as temp sensitivity goes, I’ll have to monitor that as the days warm up. We start in the 20’s and finish at over 100 degrees.

I live on the southern tip of Africa so our cold winter days isn't your winter days and I don't know how warm those cold winter morning can get out there later in the afternoon in the US of A but the coldest I have shot was round about 28deg F and hottest must be anything up to 95/100F but that's over a season, biggest swing in n day must have been around 28F to 68F and I could still finish just as strong in a F Open comp as when I started at 28F.

One thing that I have seen is with N550 and N540 is do not let your ammo stand in direct summer sun but I suppose that can go for any powder

This can be a strange concept to grasp with some VV powders... I have not tested many of them, so I will say "some".

N-135, which I have tested a LOT.
Will hold the same tune almost regardless of temp......... it is weird in that the velocity will move like you would expect but the tune does not follow the velocity change.

I’m liking the N140 in the BRA around 31.5 , although not a speed demon seems quite accurate. I may grab some N135 to test a bit but only a bit, unless of course it’s magic in a bottle.

No magic, and certainly no better than 140. It was available at the time and I tested it because I love to test stuff. I found it works in a dasher and I continue to use it and test with it. I have 140 on hand and have won with it. Is 140 better than 135, 150, 540......... I do not know, how much do you like to test and what will your budget afford?
140 is the easy button of the 4, meaning there is more info and more success stories of folks using 140 than the others. I believe all four are capable of winning in a dasher, I admit the only thing I know about bra's I shouldn't share because it isn't in line with the spirt of this forum. o_O

To be honest, I think Hodgdon pooped in their own supper dish by not keeping a better supply supply of "H" powders coming into the USA. I, like many folks willing to try and experiment a bit, have discovered that VV is making very good powders and delivering them at a reasonable price to American consumers. For me, going back to Hodgdon powders is not going to happen anytime soon with their scarcity and pricing.

Agree 100%.

Some great information guys! Keep it coming. Much appreciated.

I’ve use both N140 and N150 in my Dashers, both perform well however I was surprised that the N150 lot I have is actually faster than the N140. I’m using .5 gr less N150 for comparable velocities and the N150 load seems to be right on the upper limit at that velocity. I may just have a fast lot of N 150 it also seem fast when working up 6.5/47 loads as well.
I haven't found anything better than H4895 for my dashers but I’m looking for a replacement when my supply is expended.
