N-Frame grips, opinions?

Adam in WI

I'm looking for options and opinions on preferred N frame grips. The factory rubber over-mold with the finger grooves are a little too thin, and I find myself squirming around for a comfortable grip. Once I'm there, I'm okay but I feel like something without grooves or minimal grooves would be better. The Lett style panel grips on my GP 100 are much easier to get into position and are more comfortable. This makes me wonder if I'd be better off with the original square butt M29 grips.

I also thought I'd like to give the factory performance center style a try. They've got grooves, but a little more subdued and being wood should allow quicker positioning. I plan on running 240 to 260 grain cast bullets most of the time, so maximum recoil absorption isn't much concern.

Thoughts? Or anyone have a set of round butt grips they'd sell or let me demo?

I have a 629pc exactly like in your picture. Those are hogue grips and even though they feel good they are not very ergonomic on recoil. Hogue and pachmayer make good ones as does altamont if you want another wood selection

Are they uncomfortable under recoil? The other 44 I've been playing with is a Ruger SBH with the original plow handle grip. Shooting 240s at 1300 is not what I would call unmanageable. My thoughts was to shoot a 260 grain Keith swc over a medium charge of 2400 for somewhere around 1100-1200 fps.

Not uncomfortable at all they just have a weird angle around the bottom of the butt and it seems awkward like your hand is already rolling back and its hard to deal with the jump

That leaves me wondering if the old school square butt grips like these from Altamont wouldn't be a better choice...

Call Herretts, they are the only ones who made a pistol stock that fit my hand correctly. You send them an outline of your hand and they build it accordingly. Only stocks that I had that I didnt hammer my knuckle on the trigger guard on recoil.Trooper Jorden was the model I had. Bruce

First, an observation; these comments are based on shooting full power hollow point loads in a 44 mag 4" model 29, so they pretty much represent a worst case with regard to recoil. Our experience is that the factory square butt grips are trash for any load stronger than mid range 44 Special level. The comfort of the Herret's Jorden Trooper grip is outstanding, especially for medium to full power loads in 44 mag. If you don't want to go custom, my second choice is to go Pachmyr. Those are the two out of many tried that felt best for me - YMMV.

A square butt gro needs a square frame.

Well.....technically yes, but they do make round butt grips that are configured on the outside just like a square butt style grip. The top photo shows a 629 round butt gun over a Model 27 square. Both grips are target style "cokes". The bottom photo shows the rear profile and where they got the name "cokes" or coke bottle grips. This is the shape of the older Model 29 grips which are long discontinued. They are very comfortable to shoot and are available from a member that goes by the user name "Kurac" over on the S&W forum. These are my personal favorite and as you can see, are made for either round or square gun frames. I very comfortably shoot "full power" loads in my 629. "Trash" is when someone tells you his way is the only way.

I love the Hogue (I think) grips that came on this 686. My mits are pretty big I guess, I wear X-lge gloves. I've started shooting this gun mostly DA, but see no problem with SA either.

I used to have this same revolver with the old Pachmeyer Large grips, and they might be better for some. I just love these ones. jd

I've seen no one say anything about hand size in this discussion. I think the different views are all legitimate because of the difference in the size of everyone's hands. I've got large size hands and short fingers, so far the only grips that halfway work for me are the pachmeyer grippers, they were designed for women police officers. I can reach the trigger better with them but they are too thin. I would love to try a pair of the ones that Msinc has on his. John
