My Stainless Steel Media Thumbler Case cleaning findings

  • Thread starter Thread starter Bradley Walker
  • Start date Start date
I am doing 500 LC 223 cases at one time with 10 lbs of pins. The tumbler is approximately 3/4 the way full.

The average top loading washing machine has a load capacity of 12 to 16 pounds but how many people actually weigh their loads?

How many people are actually weighing their brass before tumbling, or even have an accurate scale to weigh their brass.

How many people have the same type tumbler, if you do a Google search more people are buying their tumblers from Harbor Freight to save money.

Stainless steel pins are made by many manufactures, come in different diameters, lengths and the pin tips come in varying abrasive qualities.

City water, well water, hard water, soft water all types of water and minerals are being used.

My wife just picked up some more Dawn dish washing liquid BUT its Dawn Ultra with 2X the cleaning and I was using a generic soap before.

The variables in tumbling brass cartridge cases is endless and all that matters is if your brass is getting clean. We are using rock tumblers to clean and polish brass cartridge cases and each tumbler is a science project of its own.

Uniformity

1. Always the same, as in character or degree; unvarying.
2. Conforming to one principle, standard, or rule; consistent.
3. Being the same as or consonant with another or others.
4. Unvaried in texture, color, or design.

Uniformity isn't tumbling cases in a Harbor Freight cement mixer with stainless steel pins.

500 223 cases weighs seven pounds.
2 liters of water weighs 4.4 lbs
My double dose of pins weigh 10 lbs.

So I am spinning 19 lbs...

My posting isn't criticizing you, but at AR15.com one tumbling posting went 27 pages of different tumblers and methods.

Its a rock tumbler, and not the particle accelerator at Bern Switzerland.

Your weight actually will be not quite as heavy as 19 lbs. The reason being your extra 300 cases and the extra 5 lb of pins will have significant volume and that will reduced the volume of water you can add assuming you fill to the same level as when you used the recommend number of 223 cases and weight of pins.

In my misguide youth I worked at a place that did deburring and polishing of small Brass parts.

Stainless Steel pins and other shapes were used for the process.

A buffering agent was always incorporated into the mix.

Things such as Saw Dust,Wooden Pegs and other stuff.

The Old Timer explained that with out the buffer the parts sometimes

would turn out worse than they went in.

Just a thought.

Regards,

Steve

Interesting input! What I wonder is the process you are describing was it a dry or wet process?

The reason I ask is if you were using saw dust or wooden pegs as the buffering agent, it was likely a dry process. The process we are discussing here is a wet process and it is my understanding that water in fact is being used as the buffering agent?

I use approximately two liters of water for 500 cases with 10 lbs of pins...

Try cleaning 100 223 cases with 10 lbs of pins... Wow... man do they clean FAST...

250 cases by weight.

250 cases in the tumler with 10 pounds of pins.

My one mod to the Thumbler. I added stick on grip tape to the rim so it doesn't slip when it gets soapy.

45 minutes.

Guys,

FYI, for those that have the SS pins already, be aware of this fact, depending on where you bought your pins from, there are at least 4 different sizes (diameters) that run from .033", .041", .062" and 0.125" in diameters and from .255" to .500" in length, that I have found.

I know from my tests, the .033" pins I have will stick 2 pins in SOME case primer holes, 9mm/38 Splc calibers, that I know of.

I plan on getting 5#'s more, of a different size and add to the mix etc.

Don

These odd size pins aren't a problem, I just seat magnum primers in these cases and blast them out while wing shooting mosquitoes in the back yard. These odd size pins are reusable, I just use a strong magnet to pull them out of my neighbors vinyl siding and reload "oops" I mean re-tumble them ::)

NOTICE: No rifle barrels or vinyl siding were hurt or injured during the filming of this posting. ;)

Are these stainless pins usually 400 series?

The pins that came with my Thumler's Tumbler Model B High Speed from STM are 300 series.

Thanks for the info,
my pins were from an outfit in UT, they are .032x.255".

I want to try some larger diameter pins to get away from them sticking in the flash holes, etc.

Don
