Just had my hip replacement May1st. Surgery was scheduled for 30 min, took 2 hours. Worst the Dr had ever done. Almost 2 inches discrepancy between the 2 legs. Worst part is the pain while all my muscles, tendons and ligaments lengthen now. Anyway, here's to a fast recovery for your son.

Chris had both knees replaced yesterday morning. Surgery went well, but he is hurting. He is walking and doing his PT. He will go home today. In his way of thinking he would hurt one time instead of twice.

Ice, ice, and more ice. If like my surgery, pain will increase after about 48 hours when the lidocaine wears off.

Ditto. I’m old but no major joint replacements yet. A couple of spinal fusions and no matter what, the pain after surgery is real. About 30 years ago, cause of my wilder days, I couldn’t breathe through my nose anymore. The Doc looked at my mri results and said, “So you were a prize fighter when you were younger.” I said no, I never gave up my amateur status. Power of prayer is real and sending that for your son.

I had both of mine replaced a month apart (shortest time gap my bone cutter would agree to): Nov and Dec. 2011. I have no complaints, and more flexibility than the Doc. and therapists expected/predicted. That said, I would never recommend the "once and done" with the pain thing!! That was brutal.

If he toughs it out and follows the routine, I'd bet Chris will come out well!! People and family who have not done the work, have not been as fortunate as yours truly.

Oh, as you know, they have you up and walking before the dope wears off, and then, into the therapy the next AM - where my cutter worked, it was called, "joint camp" (complete with the hemp leaf pics, but none of the actual weed) . . . the BIGGEST take away from the hospital/joint camp was the women are TOUGH!! They did the work immediately!

The fairer sex made the men look like a bunch of "pussies" - most of the men (a days worth of patients from four or five different "cutters" in each camp - about 16 in my deal) weren't going to get where they wanted to be - commitment to the end result entails suffering some serious pain and work, and many of them wouldn't even try!

My friend had both done at the same time many years ago, when they first started doing knee replacements. He in his youth was in prison for a good stretch several times and loved nothing better than a good bar fight. He was roofer in the hot Florida sun and was a tough SOB. I saw him climbing to steps to his stilt house 6 weeks after surgery and the tears were rolling down his cheeks, he uttered not a sound but climbed slowly. I asked why he did both at the same time and he said the DR insisted. He found out later that they were so painful in the beginning no one would come back for the second operation.

My best to Chris. Rehab after surgery can be a real bear but it sounds like he is up to it. Having a real goal helps.

Not many Dr's that will do both at the same time. Tell him to take his meds as directed and stay on top of the pain it's hard to catch back up once you get behind on your pain meds.

Dr. That replaced mine 6 weeks apart. Said no if both @ same time you don't have a leg to stand on.
(Smart a$$) Dr. Left Knee was a breeze ,right knee was a real you know what.

Between Vietnam, a wild and frisky life full of airplane, motorcycle, car crashes and 30 surgeries, both my hips have been replaced, but I weenie'd out and did them two years apart. Kudo's to Chris and extra punches on his "Man Card" for endurance.

Rick, I have a buddy out of Yamhill. He has a 3,000 sq ft shop under his home built into a hill. He is a great racecar fabricator and motorcycle guy. In the olden days he did the Baja, Pikes Peak, and until a couple years ago rode with a couple buddies on their bikes to motor cycle week in Florida every year. He also has or had an old Greyhound bus that he converted the front part for camping and the back to haul 4 off road bikes and tools. He would buy 4 KTM bikes and he and 3 buddies headed south stopping to ride and camp and on to the next stop down the west coast to Mexico. If you are ever that way I can put you in touch with him.

I know ice has been mention more than a few times. But I would recommend more ice on top of that. If you can get a cooler full of ice water and a pump set up. PT or doc may no where. Where you wrap the knees and the ice water pumps thru it. That’s the way to go for the first week or so.

Larry, he does have 2 of the ice water units. It is the secret. His older brother has a Masters in PT and is staying on his A$$.

Thanks there, Butch, that sounds truly like a grand time. But now being into "Geezerhood" at 77.5, those wild times are in the past, but sounds much like some of the chit we used to do. Appreciate the thought nonetheless. No more off-road or bikes now after those 30 surgeries. Trying to extend my expiration date!

It appears my son, who operates his own fab shop here has taken up the family 'wild mantel'.

Another secret is to tale pain meds 1 hour or more before therapy, so they have a chance to get in your system and do some good.
