My Sightron Shit the Bed....

I have 2 and like them. But not for your application. That price scope will not be one of the better low light scopes normally. Reticle is way to fine for the woods. I would be looking for a straight 6x Leupold or I think Meopta still has one.
My desert hunting gun I've taken to Southern Oregon the last few years and having a fixed 10x is way too much power for the dense woods. I need to be able to get on target as close as 25y to 400y max. I think 6x might be a little too much for close up as well. I do like Leopold for low light, but I'm not a fan of their turrets. I have not had a chance to look through a Meopta but you're not the first person to recommend them to me either.

I have 10 months to build this rifle anyway, not in a hurry.

I own several Sightron and love them. Building myself a new hunting rifle and was considering the S-tac 4-20. Anyone care to chime in on its low light ability? Also, weight? Will be going on a 6-250 in a remington action, so no big boomers. Just a simple woods walking gun.
If you can find one, Leupold made a 2.5x10x50 VariX III with a heavy duplex that was very nice. Most you run across are a finer Duplex though.

Honestly, even a fine duplex would work for me. That is a good option and should fall in my budget for this build.

I’ll suggest a odd one to avoid. I have had some vx1 and 2’s in the 4-12x40, these Leupold scopes just didn’t ever seem right on the low end and not enough field of view on the top side. I always got along better with a 3-9 power.

A Leupold 3-9 with a 40 front end should cover your needs. Plus a generous eyebox.
