my reticle appears canted to me(its not)Why?

Some people like their rifles canted, only the reticle needs to be level, make it fit you. I use my neighbors shutters to level my reticles, then slap a Holland's bubble level on the scope, yet to fail me unless the level comes loose or jarred.

You have the same problem as I do, your brain's not level in you noggin:p
Please refer back to post 12 LOL.

I shoots lots of prone. If there's not a good level berm to level the cross hairs on and I just level it by my eyes its always turned clockwise a good bit if I don't look at the scope level.

Years ago in my 20's long before I realized I don't see very level, I took a 45 minute introductory flight in an ultra light. The instructor yelled at me the whole flight to level the wings. He'd level the wings and I'd put them back to "my" level and yell back "they are level"! By the end of the flight he was so pissed off if I'd had a chute on he'd have pushed me out.
I had the same problem all through primary instruction. My instructor nicknamed me by my Chinese name, OneWingLow.:D

I set up all of my scopes using levels, squares, plumb lines and indicators.
They all look crooked to me. They all look crooked to everyone that shoots my rifles.
The only rifles that look right to me are BPCR rifles with a bubble level on the front sight.

I went through all this several times with my rifles no matter what I did get everything level look at target its canted then it dawned on me I checked the all the targets with a spirit level not one of them were level.

Cheers Trev.

I mounted my new scope using a wheeler scope level setup. (rem 700) put one level in bolt raceway and one on picatinny rail they agree with each other that rifle is level put one up on scope once rifle was level on a flat part in front of turret not on the cap. scope is in agreement with the other 2 levels. so it must b e level I also did the flashlight through the scope to project the reticle on a wall onto a plumb line and it says level also.
So the reticle isnt tilted.

SO HERES THE RUB
when i get prone behind it and set the rifle on level the crosshairs appear fairly tilted to me.Was just looking at a blank wall with no reference to influence my perception just looks canted. If it were a clocks minute hand would be about 12:02 or 3
What could I be doing to cause this?
Since its probably not the rifle it must be me right?
Cant. If everything is level, your mount is canted.

Milo, was about to make the same point. Get the rifle to fit, comfortable repeatable happy position, Then plumb bob while in position. Looks bad, shoots good

I use a piece of poster board with a plumb vertical line on it . I then plumb the poster board on the target board. I also draw a small horizonal line near the bottom intersecting the vertical one. After I get the vertical xhair lined up and rings tightened , I will shoot a shot at the horizonal vertical line intersection. I then dial in 10moa elevation and shoot again. If it hits the same place ( windage wise)10moa high , I call it done. If this checks out and still looks canted, I would venture to say it's you.

The action and barrel may not be square in the stock. I found one like that. An old Savage .22 military trainer in a wood stock. I set the scope up using the action and the rail as places to level from. Took it out and shot from 2 full turns down to 2 full turns up from zero. It shot perfectly vertical. Still looking at it from behind, the stock looked canted about 3 degrees off to the right. It shot ok so anything else didn't really matter.

Every scope my dad has ever mounted was chanted left, drove me nuts. I'd level it for him and he would complain that the horizontal looked crooked, but not the vertical. Turns out it was his astigmatism causing the perceived misalignment.

First thing you must do is get the gun level . Then mount the scope level to the gun . Last you make the level to to the first two steps . Level will be level no matters how it appears . Larry

After all the hadware is level, then go to your shoulder mount. No two are alike. Your joint may push the rifle to a cant. That can be adjusted via an adjustable butt plate.

Trust me...the levels don't lie. It must be your crooked and misshapen head. I have the same problem every time.

You do I don't think many care. About the Butt. plate . The level must be level to shoot in the same spot. Larry
