My new Rem 700 5R - bolt

Here's a photo from my new Reming 700 SS 5R 223- just received from FFL
New in the box bought from an online retailer.

Rifle is definitely new, in box. no wear or marks of any kind. pristine. Bit of residue in bbl, that's normal I'd think from a test fire. Instructions, lock, packing all as should be.
Serial # engraved on bolt matches the action's Serial #. This is the matching bolt.

My close in vision isn't so great, so took a photo to enlarge the detail of something that appeared odd. the rim is ripped. doesn't seem right...

anybody know of a smith who can do a Sako extractor retrofit job on this?
soon? I can imagine sending this back will not be quick/easy, w headspacing etc...

whats your plans with it? if youre using it for a build your gunsmith will fix it. if you plan on shooting it go try it out- evidently it passed the firing test

This is the bolt from a fully build factory Remington 223. 24" 5R
Was going to begin load testing with 53-64g bullets. for PD shooting in summer.

Boltface has a tear in the rim. 223 go-gauge check is good, extraction w dummy rounds is good.

rifle looks great & rifling is very sharp. has fluted firing pin, appears to have bushed boltface & a good quality firing pin spring.
the rip in the boltface - well that's disturbing. Doubt the actual sellers of the rifle even inspect em.

yeah , BUT - I had one of these 5R's from 8 yrs ago, sold it & some others. was a great shooter.
I'm betting this one will be too. this is a NIB "old" stock rifle - was hoping to get a more uh older production new
gun, if that makes any sense.

Greg Tannel explained the bolt mfr process, from Remington + how others make bolts, broaching, etc. his thoughts and the problems, etc.

Greg says the bolt tear shown in my photo is not entirely uncommon, cosmetic and OK to shoot it & not worry about it.
Also he says that Remington is not bushing bolts. I was mistaken.

Hopefully this post + replies are of some use for others as well. Thanx for the input.

Guess I'm having trouble seeing what the major issue is. If there is a high spot, a 1/4" round hard Arkansas stone will take it down. Certainly not a pretty bolt face, but anytime you magnify something many times with a very clear picture you see all kinds of things that aren't an issue.

I bought one of those. Same gun from an "on line retailer" came to me covered in dust like it had been on a shelf for years. I did a quick clean and started shooting it. During the second cleaning, I noticed scratches and wear on the bolt face. I shined a light into the action and there it was: a "dent" with a big burr on the face of the barrel next to the camber. It looked like somebody put a screwdriver against it and whacked it hard with a hammer. I had to pull the barrel to file off the burr. The good news is that after a few hundred test loads, the gun shoots nice little groups for a factory gun. The outer ring of the boltface has some damage from the burr but it's just cosmetic. I couldn't send it back to where I bought it because I waited 6months to shoot it. That was my lesson. Now when I get a gun, I go over it with a fine toothed comb as soon as I get it.

Every one that I have removed has been tighter than a frog's a$$ and that's water tight! I have an action wrench from bolt fluter. It hasn't bent yet.

Tighter than my wife's grip on the bank account when I want a new toy! I bought a Wheeler action wrench, a cheater pipe and two barrel vises. I haven't met a barrel I couldn't pull...........yet. Tikkas are worse than Remington's by my experience.
