My New Not So Typical Varmint Rig

I just acquired a Henry Big Boy all weather in 38-357, and let me tell you it is the most fun I have had shooting for quite a while "who knew". Apparently they ole man is still pretty good with the buck horns. Just ask the squirrel population around here, oh yeah right they can't vouch well you will just have to take my word.

I feel just like a kid when I use to watch the "Rifleman"

Got a new Big Boy in .41 Magnum a couple months ago. What a hoot! Accurate bolt actions will always be my fave but sometimes it’s fun to take a break from “serious” guns.

Some wouldn’t think so....

But .357 mag is actually SUPER frangible when fired from rifle barrels. The velocity is a good bit north of where the expansion is designed to take place.

You can get some pretty explosive expansion on small game with .357 rifles.

I shoot an 83 Winchester a lot in .357.

It’s a pretty serious gun

Cast lead only on hogs/deer.... the hollow point/soft point at close range have really early expansion and splash

Would like to post a pic of the rifle and a hog I took with it a few days ago using a cast lead 158 if anyone wanted to help out with the pic upload

I have been thinking of a Big Boy in 38/357. I think it will be cool to shoot and fun to hunt.

Use to watch ??? Hell, I still watch it. AMC Saturday mornings with a cup of coffee next to me before the news comes on.

I paid $749.00 for mine, and yes they are a blast. I was torn between the 44 and the 357, but then decided I have enough cannons and am glad I did.

Considering the big boys come pretty decent in barrel length and 357 is an option when not using the 38 ammo, the choice seems like a good one. 44 ammo is a bit pricier than 38/357 I'm guessing. Seems like 38/357 would do anything you wanted and not break the bank. Sounds like a fun gun to plink as well as round up critters with. Iron sights are way under utilized these days for that kind of stuff.

There is also a 45 Colt version which is pretty cool, Did I mention I felt like I am the Rifleman
when shooting and cycling that lever action.LOL

I'm guessing you can find a loop lever and drill and tap it for a set screw and mimic Old Chuck Connors Winchester 1894.

Has anyone tried Inceptor Preferred Defense bullets the 77gr or they 86gr ones they look interesting. So far 110, 125, and 158's all work well.

Howdy !

Yeh....I watched the The Rifleman and a whole bunch of other Western tv and movies.
Thought all Winchester’s were the same, for many of my formative years.
Was surprised to find that they were not all M-94’s, while I was yet a youth!

Upon shooting a M-94, I was fairly shocked by the amount off slop in the lever’s side play, and the fact you could basically look down nearly through the action!

When time came to buy my first rifle, it was going to be a lever gun, but not the generic .30-30.

A local gun store owner showed me a Marlin M-336 in .35Rem, and that was just what I was looking for,

These days... my lever gun is a CT-made M-336 XLR. .35 Rem, and it is pure joy shoot !

I like it a whole bunch more than my former M1895 .45-70, and 1894SC .357Mag.

With regards,
357Mag

I must be one of the modern millenial types...i have two of those modern racy winchesters..M88

I ended up getting the 44 mag version also, it is fun in a different way. You can tell you are shooting heavier bullets faster, it feels more like a long gun cartridge is being fired. I know as parents you are not suppose to have favorites, sorry the "little" 357 is they apple of my eye.

I was really pining for a, 'Henry's" for javelin but, my eyes don't like open sights.

I like to complement the normal pdog rifles with at least one unconventional rifle. My favorite so far was my 1944 Springfield M1 rifle shooting 155 Amaxs on Pdogs. Very evident when you hit them.
