My friend sent a 700 rem to the custom shop for a barrel job

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
The custom shop installed a new 25-06 barrel on a c-prefix receiver and when they were done, they spray painted the barreled receiver with a rattle can job. We degreased it to put on the mold release we use and the finish came off. Have you guys ever heard of them doing this?

Who the hell was that! What was the agreement beforehand? At this point I would be wondering what barrel was installed and how well...

Sigh... why am I not surprised. That is very disappointing, they seem to be at a new low. I hope the threads and chamber are good at least. One must wonder whose barrel they installed...

In late 2005 I ordered a souped up 700VS in .308 Win for F-Class from the Custom Shop, it took 13 months and wasn't really what was promised. It came with a standard Varmint barrel, (date code and all) trigger and a damaged (although bedded) H. S. Precision VS stock. It took 5 months of phone calls to Customer Service to get the stock replaced but never received the promised services of the Remington Rep. I ordered from.

Jon, how do you know what they painted it with, and what product did you use to degrease it? Just curious. :) WD

Just wiped it down with alcohol and it turned the pad black. I wanted to add it looked just like black oxide or Parkerizing and we did a test on the bottom with acetone and it came right off. There was a little line of bedding compound on the side about the width of a pencil lead and we used 4 ooo steel wool and oil to remove it and after a few passes it was down to bare steel. My thought is they bead blasted it and painted it with something to make it look like new again.

Had a similar experience myself I had set in a rifle that had a nice jeweled bolt on it "it was a stock bolt "to have my boat repaired and in place they installed a bench bolt that had two serial numbers on it and sent it back to me. On top of that the rifle never shot the same. Never again ! I'll stick with custom built rifles. Better two have one good shooter then six that don't.

12-14 years ago a friend had 7x57 built with a 270win bbl to swap to, by the custom shop stock work was beautiful, --shot so bad -1.5-2" he asked me to check it for him

I hand loaded checking chamber, cases, etc, all the good stuff, then for kicks ran a $1 bill under the bbl, would not go,

so I took it out of the stock, ---uuuughhhly!!! gouged, splinters ticking up, it looked like the bark of a pine tree that had been burned.

I cleaned up the cannel bedded with micro-bed and adjusted the trigger to 2.5

went to the range and .57 first 5 shot group from the 270 bbl with 130 sierra.

the stock job was unbelievablely horrible - Mike Walker would have croaked.

Jon,

in my opinion it was the best ever with the exception of the devcon metal filled, much easier to do a good job with and very very stable

I have 1/2 a tube left.

My dream gun was always a 700. Actually saved numerous times for one. But between braces for my kids. 400.00 baseball gloves and 400.00 bats, dance lessons and tap shoes for mt daughter, 17 years later ( last week). I finally purchased my dream gun for 1149.00, a savage 12 f/tr. I broke it in per savages instructions. Mounted. My 3x9 banner off my 22 mag on it to get some rounds threw it and break it in. Before my 40x burris gets here. I shot my 1st 5 shot group with it off bags just trying to see what it was capable of with junk ultramax 165 reloads, my first 5 shot group measured .48 at 100yd. 2nd group was .46, and the 3rd was .48 . The gun for me is a tack driver.

Just ordered 200 rounds of federal and when my scope gets here, I plan to walk it out to 1000yds and then start reloading and developing loads. I mention this not to bash the 700. But to talk about how good the savagel is I set the trigger at 10 oz it is amazing no creep, no bolt problems like I have heard people talk about with savages. The trigger is simply amazing took 15 rounds or so to get it figured out. Seems like a custom trigger to me. Shooting les then 1/2 moa with junk reloads just amazes me. Thinking with the federals I can get it to at least .3 moa. Should make a decent 1000 yd gun. Scope and gun total price 2300.00.

This is not out of a custom shop. The bolt travel maybe is not as smooth but iam a slow shooter and ,not really worried about how smooth the action is as much as the accuracy.I do plan to send it out to SSS and have it accurized in the winter. I have a walnut blank ordered to make an adjustable stock for it. Shot a lot of my friends 700's with trigger jobs and barrels jobs and none of them have Ben close to the savage at quite a it more expense.. I t has totally impressed me. Admittedly I do not have a lot of high power experience mostly shooting 22 mag out to 300 yds with decent accuracy. Thousands of rounds threw it practicing technique. I shoot the savage free recoil like I do the magnum.I do not mean to bash the 700 but as of now I would recommend putting it up for sale on here they seem to bring good money and think about purchasing a savage.. The customer service is amazing, 2300.00 is a lot of money for me and their customer service answered every question I had before the purchase.

I guess what I am getting at is IMHO Remington is not what they used to be, the leader or top dog, I think things are changing, savage Is putting out a great product without the need for a custom trigger or a custom barrel. and it will definately holds it own against most of what you will see except for maybe some of the better shooters, shooting customs with 2 oz triggers and 1000.00 rest. Like I said I haven't walked it out to 1000yds yet but expecting it to be very decent if not I will retract everything I posted but really do not think that will happen.
