My first full custom build

I chambered my 6.5 SAUM last saturday. Got the flush system working pretty good. I chambered my barrel at 45psi coolant pressure and the lathe spinning at 280RPM worked great! I used a JGS floating reamer holder and a homemade micrometer reamer stop. chamber had .00025" runout when finished(pretty good for a garage warrior and a $800 lathe) i used some 320 emory clothe to rough up the chamber.

Those brakes on my photobucket are from muzzlebrakesandmore.com

He is on this site and many other sites too, he goes by idahoCTD, his name is Nathan and he's an excellent guy. His brakes are very effective and very good quality. They are always my first choice when I install a brake.

If anybody has ever used one its their first choice too!

Congratulations ! Looks great. I'm hunting for my first lathe myself and that looks fun and satisfying.

Who's DRO is that? Nice work BTW. I should probably set up a flush system for mine as well. I drill and bore my chambers prior to reaming so it wouldn't save a ton of time over the pecking method but it would save some.

BTW I should have some new brakes in about a month.

The DRO is cheap Igang stuff from grizzly, It actually works pretty good, it surprised me... It doesnt have any memory but i just reset to zero before i start cuts.

The flush system just made the most sense to me when i was getting everything setup on the lathe for chambering, I dont prebore so pushing all the chips out makes alot of sense to me. First chamber job took me about 45min to cut i was just really nervous and backed out alot. This chamber i cut in about 15min and it came out great.

Nice job. Hope it shoots well for you. The coolant flush only makes sense. It has to help keep reamers sharp. It should also help keep chips from spinning in the chamber. Should give a nicer job from all the lubrication. Matt

Your turning looks good. I would suggest that you learn to thread without the relief at the shoulder. Obviously you need one on the Winchester action unless you relieve the threads in the action. It isn't difficult to do and allows you to set back a barrel and have a complete tenon without the relief in the middle of it. It's likely there will come a time when you will want to set back a barrel. Keep up the good work.

Nice chambering job, and I am envious of your flush system. I need to build one and would most likely copy yours

I like that lathe of yours, a stout little guy. I have a similar one with a different badge - Federal.

Bamban, i have less then $300 into the flush system.

- pump http://www.harborfreight.com/34-hp-clear-water-pump-650-gph-62508.html $47
- cart http://www.harborfreight.com/16-inch-x-30-inch-steel-service-cart-5107.html $40
- 5 gal bucket from homedepot $8
- Heavy Duty Dark-Color Cutting & Threading Oil, 5 Gallon Container $89
- filter system was a whole house setup ~$50
- PVC, brass fittings and air hoses from harbor frieght. ~$50

With the exception of one thing it all looks fine to me, nice machine work. I have a similar set of spiders and couldn't use them because when I started adjusting the muzzle end spider it was obviously bowing the barrell. I recently observed a setup where a guy had a split ring that went on the chamber end of the barrel that allowed the chamber end to pivot without putting a lot of force on the muzzle. Planning on making one of those before I chamber my next barrel.
