My first crack at a bench rest gun

it is a pretty enough looking rig. That big heavy 33oz. NFBR scope could be an issue, setting up that high, if it torques recoiling on the bags. I see problems with either method. Try it as is, but if it gives you two groups. you know your shoulder contact/pressure/lack of repeatability, control during recoil is the problem. mikeinct

I shoot my 30BR free recoil. Heads up.

your rest and rear bag look a lot like mine.

I do ok.

DITTO this.:) The "heads-up" accommodates, "seeing the field", while keeping squared-up to the rifle. But, we're all different - only way is to try it and see how you adapt. Even though inertia has more to work with, I too prefer a scope height, which many consider, "too high".:eek:RG

P.S. - addendum: I also shoot my Hunter Class Rifles (10.0 Lb. 30x47HBR ) free-recoil, and manage to do ok.:D

Nice looking rifle.Scope is way to high for me but I dont shoot free recoil either.I like my optics low as they will go and yes I have to take earmuffs off lol....I still use my ear plugs though;).....P.S if you havnt already get a hold of RGRobinette (who posted above)and try out his bib bullets in that bad boy :D...

Thanks for all the reply’s I need all the help I can get lol!

Looks.good to me. I like a stop on the front of my rest. Most rest are made for one. That way all I have to do is slide the rifle forward to the stop to reposition for the next.shot. really will help you to know if your setup is tracking properly. You will probably find a threaded hole on the side facing you where it threads in.

I shoot a similar set up in 30BR free recoil with a Sightron mounted high. No problem. You will adapt, might take a while, I figure it took me a whole season to refine my free recoil bench manners when I switched to it.

I don’t know much about building a 30 br just from what I have read on here from you good people. But are these rings a bit to high even for free recoil shooting?
Shooting a 30BR is a piece of cake. Recoil to me is very mild, but I've always shot big bore hunting rifles in 40 caliber and over. I've always shot all of my BR rifles in my 8 years of competing free recoil no matter the caliber. You not only have high rings but nobody mentioned your extra tall bases which brings it up even higher. I like std rings over high but that's personal preference. If your going to compete in score shooting a 30 is the way to go.
