My experience with my 8mm mauser

Ahh, the days when you could walk into a shop and pick
and choose a surplus 98 for 35 bucks. And Carcano's
for 25 bucks. And the crown jewel was finding a Jap
rifle that did not have the chrysanthemum ground off.
35 bucks!? That's crazy. I would've bought them all lol. Never seen the Japanese gun you speak of though.

Gary, is this really you talking down his nose to someone altering a Mauser? I always assumed you had cut up more Mausers than anyone else on the planet. Am i mistaken?

Ok, at least I'm not crazy in thinking he came off like that right out of the gate.
He's being nice now. Lol.

I bought a couple of hundred surplus Portuguese 7.92 heavy ball rounds from a small gunshop in South West Scotland 20, maybe 25, years ago. The proprietor said to me, "You know, until recently we had a special offer on 8mm surplus ammo - buy 500 rounds and we'd offer you a free Mauser K98k." I was astonished, but then he laughed and said "Of course, rifling was extra!"

Parker-Hale Ltd, Birmingham England used reworked surplus WW2 era '98 actions in its sporters and target rifles for many years and bought up tens of thousands of junker K98s of all origins in the 1950s/60s. Bought on the international market in large lots, the unit price for these bottom graded examples was literally pennies.

Don't expect much for accuracy or repeatability with a bipod clamped around the barrel. Other than that, nice looking rig.
Yea I thought I'd give it a shot. I didn't want to start drilling into my new stock. It wasn't expensive so if I have to I can remove it.

Thank you for the compliment.

Instead of the clamp style bipod you can use a Harris (or similar) that attaches to your front sling swivel, then attach your sling to the bipod. Best of both worlds…

Never heard of those before, I looked them up, I guess I've seen them before but I didn't know that it attached like that. I think that'll work perfectly! Thank you for that.

I have sporterized Mausers since 1965.
The book on Mausers by R. A. Walsh says to not sporterize Mausers with all matching serial numbers.

I have sporterized (4) Mauser and (1) Mosin in the last year.

The important thing is to keep having fun and put pictures on the forums.
