My dilemma

So I bought a cheap savage axis in 22-250 with a 20” barrel. I’m on a fence weather to have it threaded or maybe just sell it and put towards something higher quality with a barrel already threaded.
I have a suppressor that I want to put on it hence my need for a threaded barrel.
Just doing a search for something the savage 110 predator came up.
Want to do some p dog hunting or coyote with it.
I was unsure if the caliber but ended up really liking it and stocked up on components
Guess I just wanted to hear some thoughts opinions and maybe suggestions

First thing is how does it shoot? If it shoots to your requirements, by all means thread it. If you aren't satisfied with its accuracy, trade it off.

Well with factory ammo and 50g vmax I was very impressed. I have plenty of 50g vmax projectiles and brass. Just trying to duplicate the load.
I initially tried 55g but all groups were not good.
The 50s show much more promise just need to find right powder.
I tried 55s with cfe then the 50s with h380 (located some). Maybe I’ll try some cfe on the 50s and if it can group I might thread it

Howdy !
A longer barrel would give you better top-end vel, increase in engagement range; or more delivered energy for closer ranges than what the 20" will.

Just saying.

You should chronograph the factory loads that you are trying to duplicate and then match the speed with your reloads.

SSL is correct, shoot it and use that info to determine if you want to hunt with it.
22-250 can have a very slow twist (1-14) which can limit your bullet choices.
Hopefully you have at least a 1-12. You can measure your twist rate with a cleaning rod, tight patch, and a tape measure.

Say the stock barrel & rifle shoot ok (which is common for Savage), the going rate for barrel threading is ~ $80. Your options will vary.

Urban Rifleman is correct, you will be happy with one of his barrels.

So shoot your rifle, and ponder your options.

I chrono the 5 remaining rounds out of the box and they were in 3800. Barrel threading around me is going for 140ish.
Urban trust me I also thought about swapping the barrel. Honestly never done anything like that but i did consider a 24” threaded barrel swap.
I did measure the barrel twist with a cleaning brush and rod and came up with 1-12

One additional option is Tornado Technologies in Hillsboro Oregon offering a mail order threading service. $130-$160 last time I checked. Their website is usually current.

Having a factory rifle that comes up to or exceeds your expectations should be no dilemma. Spend the few dollars and have it threaded. I liked the idea of a longer barrel for more speed, but a can adds length. This may be about right for being usable. However, a good prefit that is already threaded allows you to shoot what you have with no down time. more money but uninterrupted use. I don't think you can make a bad decision here but maybe a good look with a borescope before making the choice.

I have the 7 twist for $239, the 8 twist for $269. Threading is $80.

Installing a prefit is a snap. I can tell you how to do it in 5 minutes. Of course, it does require a few tools and fixtures. And that is an expense, but once you have them you are FREE from NOT being able to switch barrels. In other words, you are no longer married to the turd barrels and calibers that don't make you happy. And being happy about shooting is my goal!!

It is my goal to make my customers happy, not sell them stuff. Making them happy RESULTS in them buying stuff. This is my company philosophy.

My favorite 22s are the 22br, the 22xc, and the 233a. I have made a few 22-250 that did shoot beyond my expectations, but for that case volume I try to stear people into the 22xc, which has been a real shocker. It has the right dimensions I think.
