My 6BRX at 600yds??

Hey guys a quick question. I went out to do some load testing this weekend with my BRX and had to shoot it at 600yds instead of the 400yds that I normaly test at because of the sun being directly in my face on my 400yd range.

I had a load of 33.4grs of Varget and 107SMKs with Wolf SRM primers that shot around 1.5"s at 400yds with 4 being in the .9 to 1"range most the time. My vertical with this load was always and inch or less.

Now, the problem, I loaded the same load but switched to CCI-450s and like I said I had to shoot at 600 with a 3 to 8mph head wind. My groups were close to 4+" for vertical both groups I shot were more patterns than groups.

I also had another load that shot well and that was 33grs of RL15 with the 107s. It shot a little better at 3" vertical with 4 rounds in a tad under 2"s.

SOOOoo.... Is it the primers or was it the head wind causing me probems with the vertical??? I did reload some with Wolf primers and hope to get back out tonight if it doesn't get to windy to see what the Wolfs will do.

THis is a tactical set up and I do most of my shooting for load testing off the hood of my pick up and over a bag. (I have to shoot out in the country for all my longrange shooting no formal ranges over 200 around here.) Thanks guys!!

primers do make a lot of difference.. I usually use CCI BR4 for my 6BR but they were out of stock last week so I got Sellier&Bellot primers.. the groups went from .25 average to .8" average with the S&B and that's at 100m.. probably wouldn't even hit the target at 600tards with the S&B.

I have personally found primers MAKE a big difference, even in my 30 cal rifles! A well known person here told me you can have a primer that's too HOT! So far, I have proved him right!

Thanks for the replies guys!! The wind was not moving the pickup so that was not my problem.

I went out again last night and had the exact opposite conditions with maybe a little less wind. The wind last night was a tail wind instead of a head wind. It was only blowing around 3 to 5 mph (Quartering) with the occasional switch.

I had two loads with Wolf and one with the CCI-450s. The Wolf primers had a max Vertical of 1.5" and the CCIs had a vertical of about 3"s but had 4 rounds in a tad under 2"s.

The groups with the Wolf primers were in the 3" to 3.5" range.(Horizontal) With both having 3 a shot cluster around an inch and one group with 4 in 2"s also.

To be fair when I shot the groups with the Wolfs the wind was starting to go down so I think this is why my groups showed more horizontal than the one shot with the CCIs. When I shot the group with the CCIs I didn't have hardly any wind.

Is horizontal stringing "ALWAYS" shooter or wind induced or can a load cause you to sting on the horizontal??? Thanks again guys!!!

there are no absolutes in this sports, the terms "always" and "never" is something we just can't use.

loads rarely affect horizontal but to have great impact on vertical, so when you are shooting 600yards and beyond then it might come down to a single powder kernel.. use a very precise scale, .01gn at least and the horizontal will become less visible.
when the load is within .01gn between cases then it comes down to bullet seating, when that is precise then it's just the shooter that produces vertical and wind produces horizontal... or there about...

I'd have to disagree with dansig.
My 30BR showing the greatest example. Stuff the bullet to far into the lands and horizontal happens.
I can create 4" caterpillars on a calm day at 200yds with seating depth alone.

I can't see what you are disagreeing with me about ???

I said there are no absolutes in this sport, your rifle might be sensitive to seating depth, but that does not mean that ALL rifles are..

when load, case and seatingdepth are identical on all shots then horizontal and vertical are mostly based on shooter and weather.

Actually, my horizontal problem was not with my BRX it was with my 284 that I was shooting at the same time. I "Jump" the bullets for it.
