Muzzle break question

a winner either way

Silver $$ Contributor
Im assuming one could use a larger diameter break on a smaller caliber, example shooting a 223 out of a 6mm break , and so on.
My question... is this indeed acceptable and if so do you loose anything that you would gain using a more correct size?

A brake primarily works by channeling gases through openings in the side that are designed to divert them in directions that counteract recoil. This depends on trapping as much gas as possible behind the bullet so it can be diverted appropriately through these openings rather than passing straight down the bore and along the sides of the bullet. The closer the brake bore is to the bullet diameter, the more efficient the design is. The more the bore/brake exceeds the size of the bullet itself, the less efficient the brake will be. It wouldn't necessarily hurt anything, but it would definitely be far less of value.

Ultimate Reloader did a video on Youtube where they tested your question--it seems the hole had to get pretty dang big to make much diff--The conventional wisdom says not but testing proved it could be just fine with bigger bore hole. I prefer to have a little more wiggle room on mine
Well worth a look

It "Hurts" Recoil Reduction, approximately, 3 % to, 6% Depending ON, exactly how much Bigger, the Hole Dia. is over, the Bullet Size ( Usually, NOT enough,.. to worry about ).
One thing I "Do" worry about, is the "Blast,.. Direction" of, gasses compared to, the position of, the Shooter.
We've been using PVA , Jet Blast, 3 Ports lately and, the "Concussion" to the Shooter, HAS Been, greatly, REDUCED !

I use a .338" brake in 30 cal and 6mm. It just works.

Gavintube did a comprehensive test.

Short answer is.... NO it doesn't make any difference if you were to use a .264" brake for a .224" bore.

I personally use a .338" brake for everything down to 6mm/.243" and it just simply works perfectly.

FWIW check out ROSS Brakes--Great owner--fantastic service--great Quality brakes Cheap!
Dgd6mm turned me on to them Thanks again!
